My dear husband on Sunday went on VacationsToGo.com and booked us passage on a Royal Caribbean liner to Australia, leaving Seattle in early October. Ports along the route...Maui, Oahu, Fiji, Tahiti, New Zealand, and then Australia in Sydney Harbor. Cost for this cruise, including taxes, Travel insurance, and airfare to Seattle from Minneapolis...less than $2,000 per person. Some things will be extra and we are prepared for that. Just getting to Australia is a vacation in and of itself.
While in Australia, we will be doing the stuff we had planned to do last October had we been able to get there flying Space Available on Military Cargo planes. Hubby is retired Military and flying FREE around the world is one of his benefits. We will be doing Airbandb for lodging. Then fly home Military. Getting back before Thanksgiving.
Needless to say, I am stoked to be taking a 3 week sail across the Pacific Ocean, doing things I have only dreamed of doing. While we have our wits and health, we are telling our adult children...We are spending your inheritance. They are okay with that. Hubby has been a keen investor for over 35 years. We have come to the part where we need to spend some of it.

(24,023 posts)My hubs, son and I went to Australia/NZ this spring for 3 weeks - it was our 2nd time. You will not regret doing this now while you can enjoy and afford it. Where in Australia do you plan to go? Huge country...just huge. NZ in particular is my happy place - the food, the people the SCENERY. OMG. Already starting to plan for a trip back in 2020. The birds in Australia will knock your socks off. Please keep us all posted on your trip. I can't wait to hear your take. ENJOY.

I looked at taking passage on a cargo ship. Sounded kind of fun too.
