Democrats, Sutton enter South Dakota governor race

BURKE — State Sen. Billie Sutton said Wednesday he hopes to break the Republican Party’s longest running hold on a governor’s seat in the country.

The 33-year-old Democrat from Burke took the stage overlooking rolling hills at his family ranch to the song, “I Won’t Back Down,” by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.

He said he was up to the challenge that a Democratic candidate hadn’t been able to overcome in more than four decades.

“We rise to the occasion together. No matter what the obstacles ahead, no matter what the challenges, we can work together to make South Dakota everything it can be,” Sutton said.
