Is Gun Worship America's Achilles Heel?

Millions of Americans worship the gun.

They spend their hard-earned money buying them, vote for politicians who promote them, devote large amounts of time shooting them, and fight for their right to use them — even if it’s at the expense of taking a human life.

- Snip -

A broken business deal. A hurtful remark. A domestic dispute. A robbery attempt. A vulgar gesture. A road rage incident. A bar fight. A turf war. A breakup. A bully. An abusive relationship. An angry coworker, student, relative, friend, or stranger. A misunderstanding. A moment of fear. An overreaction. A mistake. A gun.

No matter what the conflict, its existence is lurking in the background — close, handy, and accessible. A source of indisputable power.

Another quote from the linked article: And now we’ve reached a point in our society where the gun — the taker of life and instrument of slaughter — is being worshiped as a religious relic for doing what it was created to do: kill.

The majority of Americans agree with the author of this article, but those few that support the right-wing gun lobby and the death-merchants-for-profit they represent (and are paid by) are directly responsible for the death and injuries of innocents.

It is time to protect Americans from the cult of guns and the epidemic of violence they inflict on our citizens.

One of my greatest sources of disappointment in the Democratic Party is the outright cowardice in our pursuit of gun control. We should have extremely strict controls comparable to Japan by now and be on the way to an outright ban (except for muskets which are all people need for hunting anything not a person).

It's my hope and belief that Hillary will do us proud. While it won't be overnight I think we can accomplish a few major goals in her first term (and hopefully even more in her 2nd term!!).

First term goals:
1) Assault Weapons ban- no questions, no "grandfathering" and no excuses, ban them
2) Licensing- require licensing to purchase, posses or even look at guns, bullets, parts of guns etc.
3) Registration- We can't possibly expect to for any measure we pass to work if we don't know who has what. It's crazy to think that your neighbors could have arsenals and no one will know until they start killing people.

ban the import, manufacture, sale and possession of ANY semi automatic weapon (rifle or pistol) with interchangeable magazines. Don't worry about definitions, consider only function.

Other than that we are brothers.

You're absolutely right, they constantly just try to get around the law so your idea works a lot better.

I get a lot of push back from fellow Democrats on the issue, a lot of them are honestly afraid to push the issue. I think the time is right, America is ready to take the next step and join the civilized world.
