BRADY CAMPAIGN STATEMENT ON COMPROMISE GUN LEGISLATION IN THE U.S. SENATE

Washington, DC – The following is a statement released today by Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence President Dan Gross.

“While we continue to review the draft bill, we believe a majority of the components are a good step forward to reducing gun violence. It continues the work that began more than 20 years ago when the Brady background check system was first created. Since that time, two million prohibited purchasers have been prevented from buying a gun, so we know that background checks work. This is not about gun control, it is about saving lives and more than nine out of ten Americans agree, criminals should not be allowed to easily purchase guns.

There is still a long road ahead and this bipartisan bill gives us reason to be optimistic.

On behalf of the American public, we will continue to advocate for laws that have substantial impact on gun violence and will strengthen and uphold current state and federal laws.”

a requirement and funding to insure that all states input the names of criminals and those legally adjudged as having serious mental issues to the NICS database in a more timely fashion.

We need a more accurate and up to date list of the names of those who should not be allowed to purchase firearms for the NICS system to be more effective.
