Another Responsible Gun Owner Kills Baby Sister With His New Rifle
Unfortunately, mom was outside just long enough for her son to fatally shoot his sister, Caroline Sparks, with his new present.
Kentucky State Police Trooper Billy Gregory says that the shooting has been ruled an accident. Its just one of those nightmares, he said, a quick thing that happens when you turn your back.
He added that in the area it is not uncommon for parents to give their young children weapons. In this part of the country, its not uncommon for a 5-year-old to have a gun or for a parent to pass one down to their kid, he said.

(14,559 posts)cannot learn to sail an 8' dingy because they don't have the ambidextrous ability to use both hands at one time or the capacity to recognize risks and environmental conditions.
I cannot believe that parents would give a lethal weapon to children this young or that the gun lobby, including the NRA, would promote such marketing.
It is unconscionable.

(7,608 posts)weapons should be against the law, and parents should be held guilty of negligence to the minor child. Such incidents are not "accidents".

The family, while upset, is happy that little Caroline is in a better place.
"It was Gods will. It was her time to go, I guess, grandmother Linda Riddle told WLEX. I just know shes in heaven right now and I know shes in good hands with the Lord.

I'm happy for the family that they take comfort in believing that this little girl is in the hands of the Lord but I really wish they would question why God put such guilt on the other child.

What was he hunting in the house? Or even worse, did he find it?
It's my question to all of the city slickers with the open carry fetish. It's one thing to have your gun ready in the woods to shoot some dinner.
What are they hunting for in the city? What are they hunting for in a restaurant or public meeting?
You can't tell me they aren't just getting closer to what they've been taught by their leaders:
It's not about protection from crime, it's not about hunting for food or any of that with the open carry crowd.
It's about putting the people on that list on notice. It's not paintball games now.

Support a gun control organization of your choice today, and help stop the gun violence epidemic in this country.

(2,717 posts)I think mom, ostensibly ~25, should be charged with at least negligent something or other, neg m/s or homicide, for it can't be argued this was not negligence on her part.
.. this is how it's gone for past 50 years or more: Friendly gun owner negligently responsible for his gun killing or wounding someone(s), then the shots fired, then the pending charges are met by gunworld with the 'gunowner has suffered enough, how can you be so cruel to charge him when he's so heartbroken/remorseful/upset?' Yeah, & so he/she walks, often with only a court admonishment about how guns should always be treated carefully & never left in the hands of young children, shame shame.
Duh, mom, you killed your kid, you killed your kid, that's it in a nutshell.
You apparently bought the gun, condoned it as a gift, gave your son the rifle, a LOADED rifle, left him alone with a 2 yr old, & duh, your worst nightmare comes true. Should we be sorry for you? Should we say to the court 'she's suffered enough leave her alone?' And the legacy for the 5yo son, he was the gunman, should we be sorry for you?
What do you think mom? should you just be given a stern admonishment from some perturbed judge?
True, your pain & suffering have just begun & will last forever; still up to the state to do something more than wristslapping, to make lar-gos think harder when their guns are around children, that they might go to prison.

Not much is tackier than giving a gun to a kid under 10 for a present, imo. And what the cop says above is more the reaon that mom should be given a more severe punishment than admonishment & 'she's suffered enough...'.
birthday boy: Mommy! Look what I gots! A GUN!
mom: Oh what a lucky boy you are!

(29,796 posts)it's criminal, homicidal negligence!
we need somehow to change the language around these acts.
as an aside, i just discovered today that this group exists. trashed the other gun group ages ago. thank you for being here.

(6,641 posts)Many people have trashed the "other group," and this one was formed as a safe haven Group in order to be able to discuss gun control without being constantly, and viciously, attacked by NRA apologists. Most of the hard core gunners have been banned from this Group, but a few returning gun trolls still try to disrupt from time-to-time.
To respond to your post, no this wasn't an "accident" in any sense of the word. It was negligent homicide at the least, and could have easily been prevented by the idiot and irresponsible gun nut parents.

(29,796 posts)MADD did it - somehow, maybe a deliberate campaign. it's a drunk driving CRASH, not an accident. accidents happen. drunk driving crashes are 100% avoidable.
this could and should be done the same way for these gun deaths and injuries that may not have been intended but in every single case were 100% avoidable if not for the negligence of someone - someone who needs to be held accountable. what responsible human being puts a loaded gun into the hands of a 5 year old then turns her back?!
