The NRA is marketing to women, using fear of rape and violence.

The video ads show attractive young women being threatened by a big man until she draws down on him and he either faints or runs away.

What the NRA doesn't tell you is that your rapist or abuser isn't in an ally or likely to be a menacing stranger. He probably lives with you and calls you 'Honey'. If you have a gun it's likely that he will know it and probably even knows where it is. Even if he doesn't take it first it is unlikely that you will be able to retrieve it without him taking it from you. It may sound nice to 'be able to protect yourself' but the statistics aren't on your side.

Your best defense is to end the relationship at the first sign of threat or violence, get a restraining order and insist that the local police retrieve any firearms that he owns. I know it sounds wussy but it is far more effective than arming yourself after you're afraid. You won't have time to become proficient with a gun and very few people, men or women can muster the courage to actually shoot someone.

Work for effective gun control laws NOW, don't become one of three people touched by gun violence. Call and email your representatives at both the state and national level. Make your voice heard. Lives depend on it.

Don't Wait Until You Become a National Headline About Domestic and Gun Violence

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/kate-ranta/dont-wait-until-you-become-a-national-headline_b_8370724.html

"Police: MN Man Killed His Family, Then Himself"

"Officials: Dad Shot Family of 6 Thought Killed in Fire"

"Mourners Share Memories of 6 Children, 2 Adults"

These are just a sampling of the unspeakable tragedies that have captured the headlines over the past several months in America. As a survivor of domestic violence who was shot, I am all too familiar with the dangerous combination of a violent and angry ex-partner, and easy access to guns.

But by and large, the NRA peddles the same Western gunslinger fantasy they use on everyone else: It's okay to keep living in an unchecked sea of guns, because of course, you'll be able to draw first!
