Labyrinth???
There's just something about pairing up Jim Hensen and David Bowie together that blows my mind!

(25,699 posts)I actually regard Labyrinth to be one of the best movies ever made. That might sound odd to some people, but... Man, I could go for days. From the fact that it's as good in 2014 as it was in 1986, to the atypical way it looks at sibling relationships (atypical for the usual kid's movie, that is) to the... very atypical spin on a coming of age story aimed at children...
What do i mean about that? well...

They didn't put Bowie into that outfit because it's practical. Also, as the film goes on, he wears less and less clothing, and his infatuation with Sarah grows deeper and deeper...
It's not very subtle subtext, once you notice the thread of it. Part of the conflict in the movie is Sarah's realization of her own sexuality. This might be the only movie I've seen that actually does this, beyond "first kiss on the front porch" stuff, and certainly the only children's movie that does it... and amazingly it does it very well. Well enough that I probably wouldn't have noticed if i didn't have the fortune to know so many women who cite this movie as their own first moment of dawning realization. ...This might be different outside the geek subculture, I dunno, but Jareth is apparently the first crush for a lot of my female dicechucking compatriots.
The only thing that makes me wince even a little about this movie is the soundtrack... And even then only because it is the only thing that dates the movie, with its synth drum and chords, and the jazzy sax that pops up now and then. But you know what? fuck it, this song is amazing.
