Appalachia

C'mon folks, we've got to get behind these two candidates, not only for the future of West Virginia and Kentucky but for the country as well.
Natalie is running against Shelley Moore Capito for the crucial Senate seat being vacated by Jay Rockefeller. Capito's war chest is full to overflowing with outside money and we need to match that with money and effort!
Alison is running against Mitch McConnell, who needs no introduction here. She has a real fighting chance to send Mitch packing for good!
Please visit these websites to support Natalie and Alison. The future of Appalachia and a turning point in this country may rest on your contribution!

(15,314 posts)Even if you don't live in their states, it is vital to all of us to maintain a Democratic majority in the Senate. Can you imagine what a catastrophe it would be for Mitch McConnell to be the Senate Majority leader? Please help if you can!

(6,346 posts)Shelley Moore Capito has been a worthless Congresswoman. She has no concept of leadership, has followed the Republican party line unquestioningly, has created virtually no legislature herself (though she will jump on the bandwagon for her party), and has endlessly come back to her district to take credit for legislation that she has voted against. Yes, that's right. I've seen her at project kick-offs and completion ceremonies, taking credit for bringing tax dollars to West Virginia that she opposed in the House.
Natalie has been Secretary of State for the state of West Virginia for five years. She's streamlined and modernized her office, cutting out a lot of red tape and putting a lot of functions online, saving some serious bucks for the state. She's pushed for increased voter turnout, and made it easier for serving military to vote from overseas. Did you know that West Virginia has one of the highest rates of participation in the military? Anything to support military and their families is a big deal here.
Yes, Natalie will vote to support the coal industry. You can't get elected in this state without it. But she'll be a loyal Democrat, with an emphasis on open government and wise use of our tax dollars.
In the second quarter of 2014, Capito raised $1.3 million, Tennant $777,000. Capito's campaign claims that it proves that West Virginians support her, but there are no details released about the big donations from out-of-state big ticket donors like the Koch Brothers.
Please help us replace Jay Rockefeller with another proud Democrat!

Agree with everything you've said.
I hope you will consider cross posting this to GD as it deserves a wider audience. This is a race of national importance and we can't afford to lose this seat. Natalie needs our support and our funds.
Have I told you lately how much I DESPISE Capito???

(15,314 posts)..."Arch Alfred Moore, Jr. (born April 16, 1923) is a former lawyer and Republican politician from West Virginia.[1] He began his political career as a State Congressman in 1952. He was elected the 28th and 30th Governor of West Virginia from 1969 until 1977 and again from 1985 until 1989. Amid allegations of corruption he ran for reelection in 1988, but was unseated by Democrat Gaston Caperton. He was eventually prosecuted for and pled guilty to five felony charges. In 1990 he was sentenced to five years and ten months in prison. He served over three years before his release. As a result of his conviction, Moore was disbarred and forfeited his state pension. In 1995, he paid a settlement of $750,000 to the state."
West Virginia deserves better. America deserves better. Help Natalie Tennant preserve a Democratic majority in the Senate! Please support her any way you can. Go Natalie!

(15,111 posts)more women in office, that is if you think you should get the same pay for the same work. If you think women should be allowed to make their own healthcare choices, right for them and not their bosses. If you think women are equal.
If you don't believe in these basic rights, wtf are you on a democratic board for?

(19,964 posts)I don't even drink but I'd sure pop a cork for that one. Considering all the outside money pouring in for Mitch's campaign, the fact that's he's not leading by a country mile really tells us something.
The day Alison is elected would not only be a great one for Kentucky but for this country. I know she'd do us all proud and it would really give me hope that at least for Kentucky, a change for the better is stirring in Appalachia. She will also be another great woman leader in the Senate!

Progressive star Warren campaigns with Tennant
By Jonathan Mattise
The Associated Press
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. Focusing on pocketbook issues like student loan debt, Democratic U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren stirred up support for Natalie Tennants Senate bid in a packed Shepherdstown ballroom Monday.
A crowd of more than 400 cheered on the progressive star from Massachusetts in West Virginias Eastern Panhandle, a Washington, D.C., commuter community much closer to the nations capital than the states. Warren, who says she wont run for president despite rumors and support, tried to hush chants of 2020 and 2016 coming from the crowd.
Tennant, the Democratic secretary of state, says seventh-term Rep. Shelley Moore Capito is too close to Wall Street interests.
Capito wants to align Tennant with President Obama whenever possible, particularly focusing on Obamas proposal to limit carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants and how it could affect the states iconic coal industry. Tennant says she opposes the rules...

(32,459 posts)The latest CBS/NY Times poll of likely voters has SMC with a 51-43 lead over Tennant. Two years after Sen. Joe Manchin's landslide victory in the 2012 election, despite WV's electoral votes going to Romney. WV must have lots of cross-ticket voters who vote Republicans for president, Democrats for statewide office.

(19,964 posts)Sigh. Capito's lead is not unexpected, unfortunately. She's got the name and a ton of outside money. Sheesh, I despise that woman with a passion.

Grimes zeroes in on womens issues with latest ad
By RONNIE ELLIS
CNHI News Service
FRANKFORT Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes is out with a third television ad posing questions from Grimes supporters to Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell.
This time the ad focuses on womens issues two days after release of the Bluegrass Poll which showed Grimes leading McConnell among women by only one point.
The ad follows the same folksy format as two earlier ones: Grimes is seated alongside of Ilene Woods of Lynch, Ky., in front of a house. Playing in the background is the same whimsical music used in the two previous ads.
Senator, why did you vote two times against the Violence Against Women Act and against enforcing equal pay for women? Woods asks, looking into the camera. After a lengthy pause with sound of wind chimes in the background, Grimes says: I can never get him to answer this one either.....
