Food Pantry Closes
Updated: Thursday, August 7 2014, 07:28 PM EDT

Storehouse Pantry in Rutherford County closed its doors this week, after failing to raise enough money for some much-needed repairs. The owner says the cost to repair the air-conditioning system was impossible to afford.

Thursday would have been a food distribution day with dozens of people lining up for help at the Tri City Mall location. Now, with doors locked, they'll have to go elsewhere.

Generosity is abundant at Chase Corner Ministries. The food pantry sent about 80 families off with a box full of food Wednesday as part of a weekly program. They're trying to pick up where Storehouse has left off. "We're already running out of food faster than this time last year. Now that the Storehouse Pantry has closed, we will get more and more new clients who have never been here before," says Dwala Hindren, a volunteer coordinator.

Chase Corner has already exhausted the emergency supply of food. Over the summer months, they have fed hundreds of families through a mobile food truck and their weekly food distribution days. However, the pantry says they are continuing to see more clients than ever before and will soon be in a very serious situation. "It's just a month to month thing," says Hindren. "Right now, with Storehouse closing I'm sure it's going to become a week to week thing. Chase Corner is celebrating 35 years of service this weekend.

If you'd like to help through donations or volunteerism, please call 828-247-0096. They’re asking for basic needs, like flour, sugar, pasta and kid-friendly meals.
