Report: Wolves tried and failed to trade J.J. Barea to Sixers
The Minnesota Timberwolves want to cut ties with point guard J.J. Barea and failed to trade him to the Philadelphia 76ers, according to Jerry Zgoda of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Zgoda added that he thinks Barea will be waived if Minnesota can't move him.
The writing was on the wall for this about a month ago when the Wolves picked up Mo Williams in free agency. Williams will become the backup point guard behind Ricky Rubio.
Barea has one year and $4.5 million left on the contract he signed in 2011. At 30 years old, he is still capable of doing the things he did with the Dallas Mavericks to earn that deal, but he hasn't had the most productive past few years in Minnesota. Barea is coming off a season in which he shot 39 percent from the field and 32 percent on 3s. His defense is always going to be a concern, but he can run the pick-and-roll and get into the paint.
