O'Malley to talk trade in Iowa on Friday.

Presidential candidate Martin O’Malley will hold a roundtable discussion with union workers in Newton on Friday.

O’Malley, a Democrat and former Maryland governor, will discuss trade issues during the visit to UAW Local 997 in Newton. That’s a timely topic this week following the announcement of the Trans Pacific Partnership, an 11-nation agreement that is among the biggest trade deals reached under President Barack Obama.

Labor unions have been vociferously opposed to the TPP, worried that it will lead more companies to relocate production jobs overseas. O’Malley has been critical of the agreement as well, and in an advisory announcing Friday’s event, his campaign said he’ll describe the impact of “bad trade deals like NAFTA” and outline his criteria for “good trade policies.”

After the roundtable in Newton, O’Malley will headline a Polk County Democrats’ fundraiser in Des Moines.

FRIDAY

NEWTON: 3 p.m., trade roundtable with Iowa workers, 1813 First St. N.

DES MOINES: 6 p.m., Polk County Democrats’ Fall Dinner, Iowa State Fairgrounds, 3000 E. Grand Ave.
