How Donald Trump Flipped Key Swing States and Won the Election - Amanpour and Company PBS

Donald Trump is the first Republican candidate in 20 years to win both the electoral college and the popular vote. What made him so successful, in the face of polls predicting one of the closest races in American history?

Astead Herndon has spent months traveling the country for The New York Times, speaking with voters in key swing states. He’s the host of “The Run-Up” podcast and he joins Hari Sreenivasan to break it all down. - Originally aired on November 6, 2024.

And I'm depressed as hell, same as everybody else. And I'm scared, though what happened hasn't really hasn't sunk in yet. I'm shocked every time it hits me again. And I really don't understand how this possibly could have happened. Like everybody, I couldn't wait until the convicted felon/sexual abuser was behind bars so we'd never have to see or hear from him again.

And how are you and the situation in NC, I think about Black Mountain all the time. My grandmother lived in the retirement community there, lovely place, I spent a lot of time there, as you know, and I can't help wondering how they're doing. I knew all of the members of her peace group quite well, considered them kindred spirits and friends. But they were all senior citizens except one woman who was also older than me, and the last time I was there, for the funeral of the man who was the closest I had to a grandfather and there were only 5 of us left in 1999. BTW, he was 101 1/2 - and there were international guests since he had been the head of the YMCA worldwide, based in Geneva. He was forced to retire at 65 (in 1962!) and that's when he moved to Black Mountain to run the YMCA Southern Conference Center, Blue Ridge Assembly.

I believe that the entire financialization of the US economy by hedge funds and billionaires has concentrated too much power and wealth in too few hands. In the search for more and more profits, they have taken over housing, farmland, healthcare, insurance, nursing homes, vet clinics, etc.

They are squeezing the life out of working classes. We have no more blood left for them to take. Until that is addressed, people will continue to look for "strongmen" to fight for them.

Dems need to come up with solutions. Giving people $25K to buy a home doesn't help if it just feeds the private equity vampire.
