(14,938 posts)not "canceling out" his republican votes.
If you can't openly discuss elections and voting with your spouse or loved one, you might be in the wrong relationship.

(55,739 posts)but in this election? I would worry about her safety more than quaint differences in voting. if anybody in my house was inclined to vote for that mofo, they need to be the ones voting secretly and they also need to get the fuck out and fuck off.

(14,938 posts)though there was general agreement about the form our government should take, and fascism wasn't openly touted by republicans as a good option.
Yes, they should fuck off forthwith.

(4,332 posts)My Dad had tried talking me into voting R for years (he was an old time R, nothing like even the "moderate" R's of yesterday). My Mom always voted "D". They both knew how each other voted and laughed about cancelling out each others votes. But you know what? They NEVER missed voting! They instilled in me and my sister (not so much my brother) the importance of doing your constitutional duty... especially after hearing Daddy talk about his experiences in WWII.
I never told them how I voted, but they knew. It was my dad who came upstairs to tell me the afternoon that Bobby Kennedy had been shot. I wasn't old enough to vote at that point, but he knew which way I was leaning when I could. He told me once if the Republican politicians couldn't offer me a reason to cast my vote for them, and he couldn't convince me, either... then to follow my heart and be proud of casting my vote. On one hand, I wish he were here to cast a vote for Harris. I know my Dad well enough to know he'd have voted for her over Trump. He'd have nothing good to say about trump. I would have liked to voted with him this time around. On the other hand, I'm so very glad he isn't here to see what trump has done to this country he was so proud of serving. It'd have given him a heart attack.

(14,938 posts)I was just thinking earlier today about how the present upsurge of fascism in this country is coincidental with the passing of the great majority of those who fought against Nazi Germany and its allies, and against Imperial Japan.
This cowardly cabal of traitors wouldn't have gone nearly so far as they have with those WWII veterans here in abundance.
Your beautiful post reminded me of my mom hearing of Bobby Kennedy's assassination on her bathroom radio the morning after. A gasp, followed by anguished sobbing.
Heartbreaking.

(4,332 posts)that year it seemed like the hits against just kept coming one after another. We lost so many good people. I remember feeling, even at that age, that we were losing something we'd never get back again. Although I guess each generation goes through something similar, it seemed to me like it picked on us, in particular. And, actually, we didn't get back what we lost. I'm not just talking about the ideals of those we lost, but we lost our innocence then, too... and a piece of us was stripped from us we never recovered from, IMO. And they're still trying to rip us apart even more. We carry on; we fight; we dream of the better world we once shared as a dream with others. In the lingo of my day... we keep on truckin' ... tho the light seems so far in the distance. I said earlier in a message the only thing I can see is that we stand together as a coalition... all of us on the fringes, all of us whom they marginalize; standing together and fighting one for each other. Tonight, I'm feeling very old and tired in my skin. I voted for someone... a woman... whom I really want to see become president. That should make me elated. Instead, I'm still filled with worry and dread at what the fascists will come up with. For tonight, they beat me down. But there's always tomorrow to pick up the fight once again, right?

(55,739 posts)it pretty much just offends the fuck out of me. if I am so afraid of some asshole that I have to be secretive on my voting...fuck that. just fuck him and fuck that.
I wouldn't be associated with anyone who would even consider voting for trump. Or be a republican.

Its just so sad that it has to be.

(176,853 posts)There is no way in hell that my father would ever have tried to intimidate my mother into voting for the candidate of his choice. And he knew that. He came from a Republican family, but my mother convinced him to vote for FDR.
Both of them raised me to vote my own mind.

(9,955 posts)you can be sure that from then on, voting will no longer be "secretive"...............even though, from then on, voting won't even matter.
Trump has openly stated to his cult, that if they vote for him just one more time, they will never have to vote again........and they are all to stupid to realize what he/republicans mean by that statement......

(14,325 posts)you take it to the next desk to be tabulated.
A recent survey also showed about 75% of people believe "someone" can find out how you voted "somehow". Crazy.
I hope it works for anyone intimidated, but I fear it may not enough to make a difference.

(2,066 posts)political discussion should be public. Political discussion should be encouraged. Not discussing politics only encourages ignorance and apathy.

(3,170 posts)If I felt scared walking in, those tiny barriers wouldn't make me feel safe. If husbands were separated from their wives across the room. Maybe then. She'd still have to be quick and get her ballot fed into the machine quickly enough. So many opportunities to be outed. Not sure I'd risk it if I were afraid of him

Don't ever let anyone intimidate you in the polls or outside the polls either (in Missouri, I had a small fear of such people hanging around our polling places but thank goodness nothing of the sort ever happened).
