Fossil fuel money crushed clean energy ballot initiatives
...the lesson of this years energy initiatives is pretty clear: When big oil wants to, it can spend unlimited amounts of money and crush efforts at direct democracy.
And it wants to. Where it chose to spend notably, on 1631 in Washington and 112 in Colorado it won.
As I said in this piece, this rather puts the lie to the notion that oil and gas companies plan to be productive partners in the climate fight. They can and will fight it at the grassroots level.
More broadly, ballot initiatives, like US politics generally, are becoming a battle of billionaires. Big money flows in virtually unrestricted. And it is effective.
Decamping from the federal level to the states is not going to allow clean energy proponents to escape that dynamic.

"I'm sorry, I have very bad news for you,"
Energy sector carbon emissions will rise in 2018 after hitting record levels the year before, dimming prospects for meeting Paris climate treaty goals, the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) said Wednesday.
The energy sector accounts for 80 percent of global CO2 emissions, with most of the rest caused by deforestation and agriculture, so its performance is key to efforts to rein in rising world temperatures.
"I'm sorry, I have very bad news for you," IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol told guests at a diplomatic function hosted by the Polish embassy in Paris.
"Emissions this year will increase once again, and we're going to have the COP meeting when global emissions reach a record high," he said, referring to the December UN climate summit in Katowice, Poland.
After remaining flat for three years, total global CO2 emissions in 2017 rose by 1.4 percent, dashing hopes that they had peaked.

The Repukes are intent on stealing another senate seat
Just found this on reddit. If you live in the area or are in a position to help it's time to send in the cavalry.
Memphis is 2/3rds black and so our city will have zero polling locations for the first five days of Early Voting. They are also opening 4 new polling locations in white suburban areas and only 1 in a majority black area for the remainder of Early Voting. That means that it will be far easier to get to the polls from white neighborhoods, even after the 5 days of fraudulent voting with zero polls accessible to people without cars.
The Republicans opened their coordinated campaign office right across the street from the only polling location. Its obvious that they knew that the Election Commission was only going to open one polling location and they knew where it was. The Election Commission didnt tell the Democratic Party about the one Early Voting location.
Memphis is the poorest city in the US. We are majority black. We do not have the resources to fight this attack on our city alone. Please help us and be aware of what the Republicans are doing for 2018. They will stop at nothing to stop black people from voting. The Voting Rights Act is dead in the South.
The GOP is terrified that Phil Bredesen will win in November and they will lose their Senate majority. They will do anything to stop that from happening, including stealing our August elections.
EDIT: Fixed location information. Also forgot to note that there are nearly one million people in our county and around 600,000 registered voters.

Meet Donald Trump's Top FBI Fanboy
This appeared Nov. 3rd 2016. It leads to an anti-Hillary cabal of former FBI agents with Louis Freeh and Rudy Giulliani at the center. It's long, but worth reading.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/meet-donald-trumps-top-fbi-fanboy
Two days before FBI director James Comey rocked the world last week, Rudy Giuliani was on Fox, where he volunteered, un-prodded by any question: I think hes [Donald Trump] got a surprise or two that youre going to hear about in the next few days. I mean, Im talking about some pretty big surprises.
Pressed for specifics, he said: Weve got a couple of things up our sleeve that should turn this thing around.
The man who now leads lock-her-up chants at Trump rallies spent decades of his life as a federal prosecutor and then mayor working closely with the FBI, and especially its New York office. One of Giulianis security firms employed a former head of the New York FBI office, and other alumni of it. It was agents of that office, probing Anthony Weiners alleged sexting of a minor, who pressed Comey to authorize the review of possible Hillary Clinton-related emails on a Weiner device that led to the explosive letter the director wrote Congress.
Hours after Comeys letter about the renewed probe was leaked on Friday, Giuliani went on a radio show and attributed the directors surprise action to the pressure of a group of FBI agents who dont look at it politically.
The other rumor that I get is that theres a kind of revolution going on inside the FBI about the original conclusion [not to charge Clinton] being completely unjustified and almost a slap in the face to the FBIs integrity, said Giuliani. I know that from former agents. I know that even from a few active agents.
