Report: 'Grossly inaccurate' data used to divvy up relief funds for tribes

The U.S. Treasury Department relied on grossly inaccurate data in deciding how to divvy up billions of dollars in COVID-19 relief money for tribes, says a new Harvard study.
The agency ignored more up-to-date figures it required from tribes and instead went with outdated population data used by a federal housing program to distribute a portion of $8 billion in funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, according to Professor Joseph Kalt, co-director of the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development and one of several authors of the report released Monday.
Its arbitrary and capricious decision means some tribes that would have been eligible for millions or tens of millions of dollars instead are getting the minimum of $100,000, Kalt said.
"What's kind of flabbergasting to us is: Treasury, you have this data sitting right there. Why didn't you use it? he said. <snip>

Wow, I wanted to get my friend in Canada a gift of a breadmaking machine similar to
mine, an older Oster 2 lb loaf model. I can't find a single one at normal retail stores that sell tabletop small kitchen appliances on-line or in-store for pickup--all but the most expensive ones on Amazon are out-of-stock. I did find some that were in the $200 to $800 price range. Nope, it's gotta be shipped across the border - nope, not a single one available at Amazon, Home Depot, Walmart, Sam's, Meijers, Best Buy, Costco, Kohls, or Target. WTH???

22-year-old Guatemalan asylum-seeker dies in ICE custody
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/22-year-old-guatemalan-asylum-seeker-dies-in-ice-custody/ar-BB10XOwgThis was her medical journey as related in the article:
[snip] According to officials, Ochoa Yoc de Ramírez died of "autoimmune hepatitis, complicated by septic shock and acute liver failure" at a hospital in Fort Worth.
According to ICE, Ochoa Yoc de Ramírez was first apprehended by Border Patrol in early September after she crossed the southern border without documents near Hidalgo, Texas. Two days later, she was transferred to ICE custody, which initially detained her at the El Valle Detention Facility in Raymondville, Texas.
In early October, Ochoa Yoc de Ramírez was given a notice to appear before an immigration judge after she proved to an asylum officer that her fear of returning to Guatemala was credible. Sometime before February, Ochoa Yoc de Ramírez was transferred to a detention center in Oklahoma, according to Guatemala's Foreign Ministry.
Ochoa Yoc de Ramírez was hospitalized on February 7 and underwent gallbladder surgery two days later. She then returned to the detention center in Oklahoma. On February 13, she was transferred to the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, according to ICE.
On February 18, ICE took Ochoa Yoc de Ramírez to a hospital near the detention center. The Guatemalan Foreign Ministry said this occurred because she was suffering from abdominal pain. Ochoa Yoc de Ramírez remained there until February 28, when she was transported to the Forth Worth hospital, where she died on Sunday. [snip]

Hmmmm...gall bladder surgery...returned to detention and transferred to different detention; abdominal pain 10 days following surgery and taken to hospital in Ft. Worth where she was at some point diagnosed "septic," declined, and passed. Surfing around, viral infection may lead to "autoimmune hepatitis" and acites can cause trouble breathing. Hmmm...awful lot of transfers in detention. Hmmmm...was she tested for a new novel virus that could have complicated her recovery from what also could have been a quick and dirty surgery, then palmed off as "autoimmune inflammation of the liver." However her case progressed, this scared, young woman might have been safe with her family members when she first became ill, no?
