In reply to the discussion: POLL: How Trump Leaves WH [View all]djacq
(1,706 posts)I was 7 years old when Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974.
I get why the majority of my fellow DU members are voting that Trump will be voted out in 2020. I to believe in the power of the ballot.
This country's institutions is being incredibly tested, or more so, as it was back in 1974. The GOP has gone further right than the party of Nixon, Reagan, Bush 41, and Bush 43. They have become complicit and protective of an established criminal and a Russian asset who is continuing to disgrace the Office of the U.S. President in such destructive methods.
This is my thinking... If, and a really big IF, the Republican Party would have any desire to save themselves, they can't look the other way after Mueller submits his team's findings. The Republicans of 1974 had no choice but to insist that Nixon resign. It was a hard break but it was for the sake of their party's leader facing certain impeachment and conviction.
What's the difference?... Look at the poll numbers. Nixon's approval rating during 1973 was between 40-30% and was forced to resigned. Clinton's average approval rating in 1998 was 62.8% and he came out on top despite impeachment. Trump is now skating at 39% (take out the outlier pollster Rasmussen) with possibly more crimes than we can count on our one hand.
Perhaps my naivety of faith towards the constitution is more than my faith in the electorate. The electorate failed us in 2016. I swore to support and defend the Constitution of the United States six times during my 24 years in the Air Force.
If we don't have faith in our Constitution, then what's the point?
