113. My rattlesnake

Many years ago when we were living in the basement of the house we were building in the wilds of South Dakota, my then-6 year old daughter called out from the bathroom, "Mom, I need toilet paper! Also, there's a snake." I dropped the dish I was washing and ran and cracked the bathroom door open. A large rattlesnake was coiled a few feet from the toilet and my daughter. It was shaking its rattles. I told my daughter to not move, and I ran and looked for my husband's 22 (his dad gave it to him as a kid, but my husband had never shot it, or any gun). I had never shot a gun either. Still, not even knowing if it was loaded, I took aim at the snake and fired. Turns out, it was loaded. I got the snake - and also the water heater. My daughter was okay and again asked for toilet paper.
