She's not doing too well at the moment and my father is staying with her in the hospital as much as possible. The stroke has been devious. My parents have a dog and a koi pond which I have been caring for. They live in what is what was once a rural area that is being overtaken by "suburbs" but still have a great deal of untouched land that the burbs have driven the wildlife to.
This evening, no less than 30 minutes ago, I went to their house to accommodate their pets and show them some affection that they are missing out on while their normal caretakers are away.
I ride a bike. A scooter this evening and while tooling up their one mile driveway I came upon a stand of deer, at least six young ones. Normally they would have all ran like the wind at the sight of me but this time they just stood and stared as in a WTF are you? attitude. I stopped my bike and we stayed like that and I just told them "this is cool." They hung around for a few moments more and walked a few yards over and started grazing again.
Wild deer are extremely instinctual as to threat and this one time I think they felt something of my moment of mourning and concern. I am an atheist but at the moment I was convinced that there is still a lot out there that we don't understand. If I believed in god I would thank him now for that moment.
