Being an atheist only means you do not believe in orthodox interpretations of the Scriptures, which actually misread the traditional metaphors of seeking a Spiritual understanding of universal consciousness. When you fully understand the following, you will be at the point where Spiritual Rapture and Earthly Experience meet: The Wisdom of Beyond the Shore, or beyond Duality:

Om Mani Padme Hum ~ the Jewel of Illumination resides in the Lotus of the world. The Illumination means you are letting go of Ego. Gone, gone, gone to Beyond the Shore, Landed on Beyond the Shore, Illumination, Hallelujah! Prajñaparamita: the Wisdom of Beyond the Shore.
One will find himself at the Point where Earthly Experience and Spiritual Rapture meet. Thats the Wisdom of Beyond the Shore: Beyond Pairs of Opposites. One who is trying to get away from Life to Nirvana is still caught in Pairs of Opposites, but when you get there, you realize: This is It: Right Now!
