(4,895 posts)It would be different if we'd won and there was a clear danger. But we lost. It wouldn't be just the leaders we'd be fighting. It'd be the country. We're outnumbered, we don't have the billionaires, we don't have the propaganda machine, we don't have the churches, and we apparently don't have the ability to recruit enough new voters.
I can't and won't speak for any of you. But my plan is to shut up, hunker down, and hope that I haven't posted in enough places and spaces for the knock to come on my door in the early hours.
We tried, but they started in the 90's, established a massive propaganda machine, wrecked public education, enlisted the churches, and now they have an unbeatable coalition of a) the evil, b) the stupid, c) the greedy, and d) all of the above (e.g., fundamentalists). They played the long game, and they have won.
Regimes never last forever. Dynastic Egypt fell. Democratic Rome fell. The Roman Empire fell. Incas and Aztecs fell. The Catholic Church fell from power. The Soviet Union fell. The democratic United States has now fallen. The authoritarian version will, too. And since I cannot change the authoritarian U.S. and I cannot leave it, I will have to learn to live in it.
