(3,552 posts)54. I think there was a dual purpose here.
First, they're still gunning for a "recess appointment" binge -- the Gaetz nomination gave them someone to sacrifice in pursuit of that. A little "give" to justify the "take". He was never intended to make it through, he was just a tool to be used in the broader project.
Second, he had become a liability, and they wanted him gone -- they needed him out of the House and they needed the House investigation buried. By convincing him to resign for a "promotion" (that he'd never get), they had a tool to both kill the ethics report and to eliminate him as a potential problem-child going forward.

I agree, but I think it goes beyond AG. Gaetz was so horrible, all the other "nominees" look better in comparison.
