Carl Tobias, a law professor at the University of Richmond in Virginia, told Newsweek that Trump's presidency may accelerate the increasing politicization of the legal system.

"Trump 2.0 could exacerbate this dynamic, especially if the new President does much that he promised to do when campaigning and since he was elected."

"For example, the pledges to weaponize the DOJ and use it to prosecute his enemies and to pardon the January 6 defendants will not improve the federal legal system," he said.

In one of many cases in which Trump has vowed to jail political opponents, he wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social, in June, 2024 that he would hold "televised military tribunals" and would jail President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Senators Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer and former Vice President Mike Pence, among others.
