(4,973 posts)To be clear, I'm not criticizing anyone's choice to cut Amazon out; if your personal compass points away from them by all means follow it. Just don't expect it to have much practical effect
The profit percentage from all their retail operations, North America and International, is 26%. 74% of their profit comes from Amazon Web Services, which is far more ubiquitous and also far harder to avoid; one in three websites runs on AWS and over 50% of the 10,000 busiest sites run on Amazon. Also very likely at least part of why Bezos is paying tribute to TFG, government hosting contracts are incredibly lucrative and TFG has already shown that he will influence the pick based on his personal gripes and vendettas. Given those stakes, even a noticeable decrease in retail profit (but a small one, cuz let's be honest: the majority of Amazon users aren't going to jump ship), wouldn't be worth jeopardizing the much larger, more profitable division.
Short of actually looking up who hosts the websites you're visiting and then avoiding them completely, it's basically impossible to make a dent in that facet of their business.
Come to think of it
after a quick check, it looks like DU is hosted by Ezoic, which uses, you guessed it, Amazon Web Services.
