(11,669 posts)My husband and I were both raised Catholic. I abandoned Catholicism in college, because I was tired of being treated like a second-class citizen. My husband stuck with it. We were married in our local Catholic Church here in the Maryland suburbs of DC, mostly because I was already getting enough shit from my mother, I didn't want to add to it. We both kind of went our own ways religiously. He would come to Pagan events occasionally, and I would go to Mass on Christmas and Easter. He eventually got disgusted with the more conservative turn that the Catholic Church was taking and left. He drifted for a while, until his therapist suggested trying the Episcopal Church.
He went, and the first service he went to had a baptism for the child of lesbian parents. He knew right then that this was a good place. I don't know what the Episcopalians are like in other areas, but he has found the DC region to be very open and welcoming to all. I jokingly call my husband an "EpiscoPagan." I've gone to a couple of their events, and have been welcomed - not just as his wife. About a year ago, the church celebrated it's 150th anniversary, and Bishop Budde came to the celebration. He got to meet her in the reception line, and she is a lovely person.
