Seriously, attending one of these is kind of an interesting experience and I would recommend it if you have a native guide to keep you from running afoul of the other gunners.

It's really strange -- I've never felt such a strong forced, artificial friendliness in a place. It's kinda creepy and surreal because its so obvious that most of the attendees really probably wouldn't like each other if they met anywhere else. They are there because this is the most convenient forum for trading money and guns and if there were better impersonal alternatives I think the bulk of them wouldn't be wasting $10 for admission.

I mean I think I get why it works that way. The whole hobby is predicated on defending oneself from "the other" so how are they going to approach each other? Warily, on edge, giving and looking for signs that say "you're the same type of person as me." The level of enforced conformity that results is entertaining.

When Heinlein said "an armed society is a polite society" he definitely didn't waste breath claiming it would be the least bit friendly. In that way he described the several gun shows I've attended perfectly.
