Source: Variety, by Ted Johnson
Bill Maher has contributed $1 million to the Senate Majority PAC, the fundraising committee aligned with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and dedicated to electing Democrats to the Senate.
*****
Mahers contribution mirrors a $1 million donation he made in 2012 to Priorities USA Action, a super PAC backing President Barack Obamas reelection. Back then, Maher also warned of the number of well-heeled billionaires pouring money into Mitt Romneys campaign.
*****
Other entertainment figures who have given to the PAC include Seth MacFarlane, who made a $2 million donation in April; Haim Saban, who contributed $1 million in March; Netflixs Reed Hastings, who gave $500,000 in May; and Jeffrey Katzenberg, who donated $250,000 in June.
*****
Heres our side: Bill Gates, worth $91 billion. Jeff Bezos, worth $141 billion. [Mark] Zuckerberg, who should feel guilty for helping Russia slide Trump into the White House, hes worth $73 billion. Their contributions in 2016 were under a million.
He even called them cheap fs.
The game is being played on the million-dollar level. It wont do when you are worth $141 billion to write a check for $250,000, he said.

(15,131 posts)I'm as progressive as they come, and have watched and loved Bill Maher for years.
Bill is a libertarian Democrat, meaning he's not into the whole lock-step thing, which I appreciate because I'm that way too.
Whoops! Guess I don't fit in with Our Revolution...because they are a bit more authoritarian than I like.

(27,350 posts)He sometimes calls himself one, but when he had libertarian Penn Jillette on his show last August, Penn says, "Bill, you're not a libertarian." Bill replies, "You're right, I'm not a libertarian. I believe in smoking pot and that's about it." I guess the legal weed issue used to be so connected with libertarianism that it was almost synonymous. Ironically, Penn said he's never smoked pot.
PatrickforO
(15,131 posts)kind of stolen the traditional libertarian mantle.
What I understand, and was alluding to, is the 4 part matrix below - the example has outdated names in it, but basically I fall in the libertarian left, which means I'm very socially liberal - definitely believe to each their own as long as their 'each' doesn't hurt the others around them, but also very economically liberal, meaning I like more government solutions, and hesitate to privatize stuff that should be in the public good, like health care. I guess on this thing, that is just 'left.'
So there it is. However, I did see some models that depict the libertarians with the new understanding of that term, which is the Grover Norquist drown government in the bathtub model, which breeds oligarchy, which we pretty much have now.
So, what I meant is this: Bill seems to be very socially liberal, but to the economic left. Like me. He did start off supporting Bernie, as did I. And, like Bill, I'm all for legalization. I don't use it, but I don't see how it's my business if you do, unless you get high and hurt someone else. I feel that way about abortion too - none of my biz what a woman and her doctor decide. And, for that matter, about marriage. If two people love each other let them marry. Doesn't affect me. That's what I mean - I was equating socially liberal 'live and let live' philosophy with libertarianism, which it was originally. Then you had Norquist, Ayn Rand, and the rest of the neoliberal movement co-opt the libertarian meme. But you know, Rand's objectivism is quite similar to satanism. Seriously, it is. And Rand Paul - he's a small government conservative, NOT a libertarian in the traditional sense because he's against abortion.
Anyway, that's my two cents worth. No argument, though, but hope what I wrote above and this matrix clarifies what I said. But, yeah, I do concede the point that libertarianism now basically serves the adversary. These billionaire freaks and purist capitalists are not warriors of the light, let's put it that way.

(11,936 posts)Civil libertarianism means the government stays out if your bedroom, leaves pot smokers alone and a basic rejection of a large police and surveillance state.

(31,261 posts)I would like him to keep quiet so that republicans don't know he contributed the money. Some rich democrats open their mouths too much, rich republicans contribute huge sums to dark funds and keep their fucking mouths shut.
As far as him agreeing with me, you are way, way fucking wrong. If you ever read any post from me about his show, you would know that I mostly agree with most of what he says, with some notable exceptions, like his softness on me-too and his harsh views on Muslims vis a vis radicalization.

(22,976 posts)Republicans could find this out, anyway. I like the fact that, since unfortunately money drives everything now, that hes up front with it, because others are more likely to follow.
Just my perception of it, thats all.

We don't come to DU to get the same kind of behavior that you find at a MAGA rally. I would suggest - and I mean this sincerely and not as an attack - but getting some counseling regarding the anger. I'm done with you.
