No coping skills and a searing resentment that their freedom is limited. Sheltering in place drives them mad. In our on-demand society, the very thought that they have to apply some restraint and sacrifice is making them unbearable to talk to or be around. Perhaps Im generalizing, but I feel the Republicans in my life are about to crack faster from quarantining than the Democrats.

The intent is to provide a sectarian replacement for secular civil life. A replacement for the public commons.

I am seeing all age groups, including elderly folks, going about life as usual, strolling in & out of stores as if nothing is different in our society these days.
Incomprehensible stupidity and complete lack of social conscience. Wait, I think that might be the definition of repuke!
We are completely hunkered down but have had to go out for unforeseen reasons a couple of times & I observed people's behaviors.
Who in their right mind would visit a store to buy something as frivolous as bedding flowers? Much as I love flowers, this is just not a good time to risk one's life, or another's life by clogging the healthcare system...
I think they are a subspecies of humans...most are clinically insane for sure!

(1,076 posts)The boo hooing about shelter in place because my husband and I are introverts who arent into socializing. Were also a one-income family, so going out is not something we do very often. One income also means my husband works while I stay home with only my cat and my own company to amuse me. If it werent for my mother and grocery shopping, I could go weeks or months without even talking to someone other than my husband. And Im fine with that.
I dont get how people see any of that as depriving them of their liberty. Maybe they dont get how liberating it is to have so few obligations on ones time and energy?

(6,477 posts)It's all some "government plot," etc.
Our public discourse for how we discuss institutions relative to individuals is completely broken. The belief that institutional actors and organizations are engaged in a giant plot against you is virtually a comorbidity.

(64,935 posts)Just as propaganda has been unleashed from the right for decades, there's now left wing propaganda influencing people on social media. I think that the source is different, but the purpose is the same. Tap into people's fears, stoke resentment against others, and encourage people to feel helpless and hopeless.
The result is a population that lacks resilience.
The American experiment is collapsing in on itself. Both sides of the spectrum have wieleded the "Don't trust the government" one too many times and that eroded faith in it.
I hold out hope though our fragile system can hang on and do good for most.

(64,935 posts)For forty years hate radio and Fox News has used propaganda to rile up people's fears and stoke resentments. That's how Republicans get people to vote for them. It's no wonder that millions of Americans are now attuned to fear. They've been trained - literally - over decades to focus on their fear and anger.
Rush Limbaugh doesn't teach resilience. He teaches fear.
Now there's something to fear, for real. Republicans aren't going to handle this well.

My wife and I listen in to his show because it amuses and amazes us.
One of his big themes before all this started was that the media was trying to create a recession to hurt Trump. I'll skip over the details because you really wouldn't believe them. His point was that you don't have to BELIEVE in a recession. Just because you hear that there is one doesn't mean it should affect you. You can will your way out of its effects. No seriously. And I've heard that elsewhere in RW media and social media.

(64,935 posts)That's his particular genius. There's always some small part of what he says that is true, and he weaves all the lies around it.
If people feel optimistic, they keep buying things, including stocks. So there's a little bit of truth there, but his overall message is of course a total lie.

(918 posts)this is nothing. Sure, being confined to quarters sucks, I hate it too. But all you have to do is stay home, watch movies, drink bourbon, or whatever.
During the war, you could be sent off to be killed in the slaughter. If you were here at home, you had rationing. I suspect our grandparents would have marveled at our grocery stores even as picked over as they are today, compared with the difficulty of getting basics like sugar, flour, etc.
And yes, everyone did it for the "common good", including republicans.

None of them enjoyed money, no matter how much they had, because they always thought it would go away in an instant.
My grandmother was a manic about recyling long before it ceame en vogue. Not because of an environmental stance, but because eveything had to be reused or repurposed because you never knew when you would get something like it again.

(7,188 posts)Here's a sampling of what I've heard these past few weeks from the Trumpers I know:
--Make believe we shouldn't worry so much, there's a vaccine just around the corner. Dear Leader said so.
--Make believe the media is over-hyping what is essentially a bad type of flu.
--Make believe we have the very best health care system in the world. Those poor people in northern Italy, if only they were sick and dying in US hospitals they'd be better off.
--Make believe Dear Leader is doing an outstanding job. His enemies are just out to get him.
--Make believe the lib-tards will exploit the situation to implement their socialist agenda and take away your guns.
--Make believe you won't be affected because you've never been that sick.
--Make believe the Chinese unleashed the virus as payback for Trump's tariffs on their goods.
--Make believe the economy will come roaring back right soon.
--Make believe the atheists are happy because the churches are closed.
--Make believe there are shortages and hardships because... Obama.

(6,064 posts)The store was just opening for the day, so nobody was coming out the door, and lots of people were on the way in.
Two 50-ish goofballs were standing there chatting, while one of them was puffing away on a cheap cigarette. (I gave it up 30-years ago, but still hate the stench of cheap smokes)
They were blocking the exit doors, less than 3-feet apart from one another, and the smoker was positioned such that everyone going into the store had to pass within 3-4 feet of him.
The law states you cannot smoke within 15-feet of a business doorway, yet he's puffing away about 2-feet from the rail that separates the in/out doors.
I gave him my best stern voice- "No smoking by the doorway!".
He seemed shocked I said something, as everyone else just walked by.
After I'd passed by, he mockingly said "Yes, Sir".
These assclowns are looking for ways to act up and own the libs.
Such a pack of low-rent scumbags.

(56,972 posts)Some people always act on their own assumptions and prejudices.
I was once going through security at Logan Airport in Boston, passed, and was suddenly approached by a TSA guy, saying I had been "randomly" selected for a supplemental search. I got it--one guy. traveling alone, with a dark (back then!) beard, looks suspicious. Instead of getting the expected protest from me, I said, in my sternest southern drill sergeant voice, as if giving HIM an order, "alright, sir, let's get it done!" He was stunned, ran his hands down my sides in less than 1.5 seconds, said thank you and walked away. I did my best to keep a straight face until I was far away.
