(6,330 posts)I typically read 3-5 books a week from my local library. While the library was closed, Libby was a lifeline. I've now gone back to paper books since the library is now partially open doing curbside pickup.

(6,330 posts)Online catalog, put a hold on selections, get a email when ready. Call when there at curbside, they bring books out and leave them on a table, and I pick them up there.
The library is not open except for curbside.

Audible.com is a great website to research for books. You go browse and select either new releases, coming soon or mystery & thrillers. In any of those choice you can filter down to cozy and see what is out there.
I also use amazon.com and the library to look for new books as well. If I find something of interest I look to see if my library has the book first.
I follow so many series (more than the cozy genre) so maintaining an excel spread sheet helps me to know when the next book comes out in a series I like. And I color code the books by whether I am going to get it from the library, kindle version or audiobook.
I also look for spin off series. The Cat in the Stacks series has a spin-off and the first spin off from the Lady Hardcastle series is scheduled for release.

(3,822 posts)Many states have reciprocal agreements with other library systems within their states to give other residents in the same state their library card. I'm in NY state, with about 23 different library systems so I have collected about 8 cards. Everytime I go to a different area of state I try and get a card for that library's system.

(3,996 posts)Its not as good as my friends in Arlington VA but good enough
I wish there was a way to expand.

(3,822 posts)Are you in one of these neighboring VA counties, (see link) if so, looks like you could apply online. If not, next time you're up there I would go into one or more (if not successful first time) of the Arlington libraries and ask for one anyway. Tell them you're from a rural VA area, not much selection. Since you're a state resident, maybe they will take pity on you and give you one anyway. Heck, if they are giving them to people from MD and DC, why not you? Also, check neighboring VA library systems. Most times you can just apply online and get extra cards that way. My sister-in-law from CA has the same crazy obsession as I do -- collecting library cards. We like to joke about it. Gee I even broke my elbow on the way to get one library card. I staggered into the library and still got the card. My sister-in-law's library system will give a free card to anyone that asks for one. Catch is you have to go there in person to get it! Was going to go out there last August and that was on my to do list, but unfortunately plans fell through.
https://library.arlingtonva.us/services/accounts-and-borrowing/get-a-free-library-card/#:~:text=You%20can%20get%20a%20free%20library%20card%20if,may%20apply%20for%20an%20Arlington%20Public%20Library%20card.
Looks like you can get one from this VA library system if you're not already a resident:
https://www.bplsonline.org/services/get-a-card/
LOL -- I just got a temp one from there! Interesting to see what it gets me...
Also, I think the NYPL gives non-residents a card for free for three months, then after that there is an annual fee if you want to continue. Many other states will give you an online card too for an annual fee. If I think of anything else, I'll pass it on.

Very kind of you to provide this information.
You lifted my heart today.

(3,822 posts)It's my pleasure really, so happy to share with you. I love checking books out electronically, so much fun. I used to check out real books and forget to return and incur fines. I love this because they are automatically returned or easily renewed. So much easier when travelling too, I used to bring 7-8 novels on vacation with me so I'd be sure to have enough to read. Also, if I can't find one book I want (checked out) it's easy to put on hold or check another library system for it.
This is very important: be sure to save, copy, etc., all library cards and PIN numbers as sometimes you will need them to sign into Overdrive or Libby. I've misplaced a few of mine and am now trying to track them all down and keep in one place, because I won't have access to those libraries until I recover that info. I have more library info to share. Will PM you.

(3,996 posts)If a library is hooked up with EPSCO, card holders can have access. I think this includes a huge trove of research (admitted researchaholic here 🤓 . This might be the link that provides materials to all libraries. I tripped onto EPSCO following a link my administrator provided to order a book series. Not sure how exactly I landed here. Waiting for response from administrator 🙏

This is a fun project. Glad I lived long enough to enjoy huge access in the comfort of my sanctuary.
Maybe a Library Share DU Group could help others gain free access to e & audio books etc

(3,822 posts)I will check this out. I'd be curious to know if you have success obtaining other VA library cards. Here's link for Fairfax: hopefully you are in one of the right counties for them, otherwise it's $27.00/year. That is not bad really, for a huge system like theirs. Many fees I've seen are $50.00 or higher for the year for a much smaller system.

(3,996 posts)My Library tax is 4x that a year and greatly inadequate without Libby & even with Libby cant hold a candle to Fairfax County.
Will pursue. This is my friends county & they rave about their library.

I may break down and get one myself. Too bad you're not in one of allowed counties, but maybe from another large city area -- Richmond?

(29,796 posts)Is a stripped down version of the Overdrive app. Libby is great for tablets and cell phones. I commute an hr one way each day to work and listen to audiobooks on Libby. I read books on it and I pick up the latest women's magazines that you see at the grocery checkout or the latest needlepoint magazine.
You can link multiple cards on it so that increases your options.

(3,822 posts)I don't know what state you are in, but if you want more library cards from your state, google "library systems and your state name" and it should give you a list or you will get a list of all the libraries in your state. There are 23 library systems in my state and I have about 8 cards from neighboring systems or sometimes not, because most of them have reciprocal agreements to give cards to residents of their state. You should be able to just apply electronically. Read my posts above to OhNo-Really, to see what I'm talking about, I found several links in his/her state. I even got a temp one myself from one of her state's libraries!
