CONVENTION EVENTS MEGA-THREAD

I've noticed a number of people starting to post links to individual DNC events for next week. Since it would probably be a good idea to try and keep all this stuff in one easy-to-find place, how about this: If you know of an event for next week's Convention, post it here as a reply to this thread. I'll keep track of the events, and on each day next week I'll start a new thread for the day's schedule, based on the events we collect here in this mega-thread. I'll then pin those daily threads to the top of General Discussion to keep them visible.

So go for it -- if you have Convention events to share, please post them here in this thread.

25. CONVENTION EVENT: Third Way: The Role of State Government During Times of Crisis
Thu Aug 13, 2020, 04:49 PM
Aug 2020

COVID-19 is threatening the financial health and well-being of our nation’s students, as well as the colleges and universities they attend. For many institutions of higher ed—especially public schools—CARES Act emergency relief funding just scratched the surface of what they need to survive, and states already stretched thin by the pandemic are struggling to close that gap.

How are state leaders responding to increased financial need from their public university systems? What guidance are they providing to colleges around their fall reopening plans to keep students and faculty safe? And what action do states need the federal government to take to protect and support their higher ed students and systems in this critical time?

To dig into these questions and more, join Third Way and Dr. Zakiya Smith Ellis, Chief Policy Advisor to Governor Phil Murphy (and former New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education) for an on-the-record conversation about the role of state government in response to coronavirus.

26. CONVENTION EVENT: #AtTheTable: Women, Politics and the Future
Thu Aug 13, 2020, 04:50 PM
Aug 2020

August 18, 12PM ET/11AM CT/10AM MT/9AM PT

Even before women were allowed to participate in our Democracy by voting, they were running for office to change our country. Fast forward 100 years since women were given the right to vote, and there are a historic number of women in Congress, yet we still account for less than 25%, even though they are more than 50% of the population. Women of color and LGBTQ+ women are even more underrepresented in these roles. This Twitter Town Hall will feature Emerge alums and Democratic women from across the country who are running for Congress this year. The discussion will focus on the priorities and policies that Democratic women on the ballot in November want to see pushed forward in Congress, why we need more women's representation in our decision-making rooms and the role that women will play in politics going forward as candidates and the base of the Democratic Party.

36. CONVENTION EVENT: Save the Children Action Network: Saving Child Care
Thu Aug 13, 2020, 05:22 PM
Aug 2020

Join Governor Jared Polis (D-CO), Congresswoman Deb Haaland (D-NM) and parents living the child care crisis right now for a discussion during the Democratic National Convention about how we can build a stronger child care industry that meets the needs of kids and families.

Governor Jared Polis is an entrepreneur, education leader, and public servant. After launching several successful companies, Governor Polis committed himself to making sure other Coloradans had the opportunity to pursue their dreams through founding schools for at-risk students and new immigrants and started nonprofits to help veterans. Prior to serving as Governor, Polis served on the State Board of Education and represented Colorado's 2nd Congressional district.

After a lifetime of organizing communities to stand up for New Mexico families, Congresswoman Deb Haaland was elected as one of the first Native American women to serve in Congress. She serves in leadership roles as the 116th Congress Freshman Class Representative to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, House Democratic Region VI Whip (Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona) and Deputy Whip for the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Mark K. Shriver is the president of Save the Children Action Network, where he leads an effort to mobilize Americans to ensure that every child in the U.S. has access to high-quality early childhood education and that children around the world survive and thrive. He is also Senior Vice President of U.S. Programs & Advocacy at Save the Children. Shriver’s career fighting for social justice in advocacy and service organizations, as well as elected office, has focused on advancing the right of every child to a safe and vibrant childhood.

Elliot Haspel is an early childhood policy expert and writer, and the author of Crawling Behind: America's Childcare Crisis and How to Fix It. A former public elementary school teacher, Elliot’s writings have been featured on numerous mediums, including The Washington Post, USA Today, and The New Republic. Elliot holds an M.Ed. in Education Policy from Harvard University's Graduate School of Education.

Dana Harvey is an accountant and lifestyle blogger with two young girls. She spoke out publicly for the first time in early 2020 on the issue of affordable quality child care in America partnering with CareForAllChildren. Dana is a middle class parent utilizing friends and family as primary childcare for her own children due to a broken system. She is propelled to sharing her story to drive change and influence on early childhood education.

Ty Tutson is a High School Chemistry and Biology teacher for a private school. His wife is the founder of B.L.A.C.C, a community outreach organization that works to bring awareness to marginalized communities. Prior to becoming a teacher, he was a human resource manager for a large corporation. He left for more freedom and flexibility as a father and husband. Ty has found that too often for couples with young children, one of the partners needed to make a career sacrifice in order to have adequate care for the children.

Tiffany Welch is the central Iowa community lead with Save the Children Action Network. She has her bachelor’s degree in Marriage, Family, and Human Development from Brigham Young University. She advocates for kids to make the world a better place for her children, extended family, and the good of humanity.

37. CONVENTION EVENT: Emerge: The 19th at 100
Thu Aug 13, 2020, 05:24 PM
Aug 2020
Emerge hosts a panel discussion marking 100 years since passage of the 19th Amendment, with an eye of how far we still have to go.

While we have come a long way since the 19th Amendment, America has yet to fulfill the promise of true equality for Black women.
This discussion will look into the unsung heroes of the suffrage movement. Highlighting Black women who marched alongside white women despite being relegated to the back and not receiving full voting rights until decades later.

The 19th Amendment may have been a starting point for women’s inclusion in the political process, but it was far from the last word.
Fast forward to 2020, and we still see how between being sidelined from fully participating in the election process has affected Black women’s ability to fully engage in and influence modern politics.

We will look back at the past, examine where we stand today with Black women’s representation, and examine solutions to overcome barriers and build a more equitable system.

49. CONVENTION EVENT: Truman Two Weeks in November: A Post-Election Scenarios Discussion
Thu Aug 13, 2020, 05:55 PM
Aug 2020

In only three months, a hyper-polarized America will head to the polls. Much of the voting infrastructure will be unfamiliar and untested, cobbled together to make an election possible at all in a socially-distanced world. What we know for sure is that this will be the first election in most Americans’ lifetimes without real-time results and or election-night winners. As a result of the expected record-setting numbers of mail-in ballots, official results may take weeks laying waste to most American’s expectation for what a “normal” election looks like. This period - known by international electoral observers as the counting period - is vulnerable to aggressive disinformation campaigns that will seek to undermine the credibility of our elections and will be the lynchpin of whether November’s election is perceived as credible or not. The two weeks following the election will be ripe for chaos. In turn, that level of credibility may, for the first time in our lifetimes, determine whether there is a peaceful transfer of power in the United States.

So, how do we prepare? What can we expect in terms of foreign and domestic disinformation? How do we ensure that thought leaders, members of the media, and everyday citizens are armed with the information they need to know what to expect? What if the election is too close to call for weeks? And what happens when the current president is already sowing doubt on the election outcome?

Speakers:

Camille Stewart, Political Reform Fellow, New America; Fellow, Truman National Security Project

Josh Berthume, President and CEO, Swash Labs; Fellow, Truman National Security Project

Alexandra A.K. Meise, Senior Fellow, Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law, University of Pennsylvania; Fellow, Truman National Security Project

59. CONVENTION EVENT: Beyond the Feel-Good Photo Op: Military and Veteran Families Speaking Out
Thu Aug 13, 2020, 06:18 PM
Aug 2020

In politics as well as culture, representations of military life can be very two-dimensional. While there’s a focus on the happy homecomings, the dreaded departures and every human grind experience in between are often overlooked.

What happens when that understanding is lost? And how can military family members and veterans help reclaim our narrative?

Join this virtual panel discussion as we discuss why it’s so important for military families and veterans to get involved in the political process and push for policies that more accurately reflect our reality.

Speakers will include:

Sue Hoppin is the Founder and President of the National Military Spouse Network and the spouse of a retired Air Force officer
Stephen Peters is a Marine veteran, the spouse of a recently retired Marine, and the Director of Communications and Marketing for the Modern Military Association of America
Mallory Sharpe is a program coordinator and active duty Air Force spouse of 5 years
Sarah Streyder (moderator) is the Founder and Director of the Secure Families Initiative and an active duty Air Force spouse of 5 years
Erin Anhalt (opening remarks) is a Navy spouse of 21 years, mother of three, and member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma

Start: Thursday, August 20, 2020 • 4:00 PM • Central Daylight Time (US & Canada) (GMT-05:00)
