'Equivalent to manslaughter': This governor ignored pandemic mitigation efforts. Her state has the highest COVID death rate in the worldSince the beginning of the pandemic, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) has often followed the lead of President Donald Trump by disregarding science and the public health warnings regarding the coronavirus pandemic.
In Noem's state, there is no mask mandate and very few mitigation guidelines are in place. Now, South Dakota has the highest coronavirus death rate in the world, according to Native Sun News. Dr. William Haseltine, president of ACCESS Health International and author of the book "My Lifelong Fight Against Disease," recently weighed in on the alarming coronavirus outbreak in South Dakota as he lambasted politicians for politicizing public health.
According to Haseltine, the South Dakota COVID outbreak is "as bad as it gets anywhere in the world." He blamed the Republican governor for "ignoring public health measures that would have been successfully used to curb the spread of the virus elsewhere in the world." Describing her lacking leadership as the "equivalent to manslaughter," he expressed concern about the continued refusal to enforce mitigation guidelines despite the state's infection and death rates.
The Hill reports that South Dakota now has a 12.1 percent positivity rate for coronavirus. On Nov. 12, the state hit a record high of 1,821 cases reported in a single day. Both statistics are glaring red flags that signal an accelerated spread in the state. With a state population of less than 900,000, statewide, the numbers are alarmingly high.

I don't know what;s wrong with that women, whether it's simple ignorance, religious and political dogma blocking out reality, or malice. S. Dakota deserves better. I hope this twit has taught them exactly what Republicans are and they get a little smarter next time after they've buried and counted the dead.

(15,238 posts)A quick check of the Covid overlay in Google maps shows neighboring Nebraska and North Dakota as having higher per capita rates. Theyre all pretty appalling, but South Dakota doesnt necessarily get the prize for most appalling.

(71,281 posts)North & South Dakota are #1 & 2 respectively. (The last column is deaths per million population)
1 North Dakota 75,478 +1,077 887 +4 65,976 8,615 99,044 1,164
2 South Dakota 76,142 +1,283 849 +28 59,981 15,312 86,069. 960
Iowa is 3rd at 720, WI 4th at 540. Nebraska is next at under 500.

(5,873 posts)They have 960 deaths per million. New Jersey is top with 1,915 deaths per million.

(71,281 posts)I sorted the cases per million descending, when I thought I hit deaths.
You can see the cut & paste in my first post showing the #1 & 2 rating on the far left.
They are 1 & 2 in cases per capita, not deaths. I was sure I clicked on the death column, but no.
My fault. Thanks for catching it.
But, that they're still higher than Iowa, Wisconsin or Nebraska still holds.
Their cases & deaths per million in the Dakotas are higher than those neighbor states.
I failed to look at the rest of the table to see those higher values. My state falls right between the Dakotas.
Just missed it.

(52,509 posts)"From a nurse in South Dakota:
"I have a night off from the hospital. As Im on my couch with my dog I cant help but think of the Covid patients the last few days. The ones that stick out are those who still dont believe the virus is real. The ones who scream at you for a magic medicine and that Joe Biden is going to ruin the USA. All while gasping for breath on 100% Vapotherm. They tell you there must be another reason they are sick. They call you names and ask why you have to wear all that stuff because they dont have COViD because its not real. Yes. This really happens. And I cant stop thinking about it. These people really think this isnt going to happen to them. And then they stop yelling at you when they get intubated. Its like a fucking horror movie that never ends. Theres no credits that roll. You just go back and do it all over again."

I never thought I'd see a worse governor than Sarah Palin but there you are. I just feel sorry for the Native Americans and others sane citizens in her state. They didn't ask for this.

(11,839 posts)At that rate of positive tests, NYC would have had well over 1,000,000 cases. And, it`s much worse than that, I believe; I don`t know how to weight each factor.
NYC is MUCH more densely populated, which would not improve the infection rate, for example. She has managed an absolutely atrocious, virtually criminal debacle in the state in which she is supposed to be the caretaker.
She has become the undertaker.

(697 posts)On Worldometers I'm seeing South Dakota at No. 10 with 960 deaths per million. No 1 is New Jersey at 1,915/M, New York at No. 2 with 1,765/M, Massachusetts at No. 3 at 1,538/M, Connecticut at No. 4 with 1,382. All of those have a death/M of population higher than the current no. 1 in the World - Belgium with 1,373/M.
