General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe media is out to get Joe Biden no doubt about it. The Joe Biden's Failure meme.
Joe didn't fail in Afghanistan nor is he failing in trying to get done what he campaigned on.
If Mitch and the republicans by use of the filibuster and with the help of 2 grifters in Sinema and Manchin
stop some or part of or all of Joe Biden's legislature agenda how can this be called HIS FAILURE?
The American people and our environment are the ones who are gonna hurt not Joe. The things in both
the build back better and the infrastructure bills are very much needed and very popular with the American
people and the onus of not getting these things is on the GOP and Sinema/Manchin. And in 2022 we can
hang that around their necks.

(36,429 posts)And the air lift evacuation out of Afghanistan was the biggest and most successful in history.
And almost everyday another plane load of Afghani, Americans, or our friends takes off and
leaves Afghanistan because Joe hired grown ups and they have negotiated to allow that with
the Taliban. And how in the hell is Joe responsible for an ISIS suicide bomber Joe's fault?
Joe is doing a great job end of story.

to sell the idea that Trump was some kind of business genius instead of a failed businessman
who was living large of borrowed money, not paying his bills, and money laundering for various
Russian mafia types, illegal drug operations, Iranian terrorists*, oligarchs, and other shits through
his real estate.

Of course Putin has rigged the media to support his puppet Trump.

his crimes and would continue his policies and I have no doubt that Trump dropped the sanctions
on Putin/Russia.
BTW when our intelligence people found out that the Russians were working to help Bernie in
2020 you know what he did? Get after the Russian bad actors? No, he fired the intel people
because they were doing their jobs and they briefed the needed committees in Congress.

(11,767 posts)To reduce the current media's activities to "being bought" by some shady entity or foreign influence is reductive and give as false and misleading a scenario as when right wingers call it, "the liberal media".
Journalists (the actual reporters) the ones who gather the news and initially report it, are by and large operate within the bounds of journalistic integrity and likely from a liberal framework, which simply means they gather information and report it, with changes, with details, etc. and allow that information to be interpreted. Unfortunately, that is not where the media ends. We have newsrooms, boards, owners, shareholders, etc... all of whom have influence on the final media product. What dives the media system as a whole? Well, a lot of things, but mainly it is MONEY. Profit, revenue, that drives how media is presented. Presenting Biden's policies in their complexity with sober analysis of their positive and negative impacts is frankly boring and people would turn away from the news which needs to sell 24 hours of ad space a day. Conflict sells, calamity sells, people yelling at each other and calling each other names-Sells. Yes, there is evidence that Russian trolls are feeding misinformation. Yes, it filters into the news. Yes, the GOP runs with the misinformation and stokes fear and anger. All of that advantages their goals. That is not to say they are "in control". The media wants fire and the Russians and GOP give them fire because they do not have any actual substance and they know that "fire" sells.
We have NEVER had a "fair and objective" media. We should not expect a fair and objective media. What we should expect is the media to report accurate information AND to tell us what their bias it.
Rachel Maddow for instance, with all her personal quirks and style, is someone I trust for a few reasons. 1. She always tries to be accurate, and when she is not, she corrects herself, publicly and in as loud a voice as which she used to report. 2. She tells us what her bias is. She is a liberal. She says it. That is her known perspective. She does not claim to be unbiased and "just reporting the facts". She reports facts but interprets them from her liberal perspective.
The difference between her and any other person at Fox is that they lie. They lie to everyone's face. They say "I am just reporting the facts". They give their slanted perspective but expect people to believe they are telling the "truth". "We report, you decide". No, that isn't how it works, especially when you only report what is favorable to your perspective, which you haven't even told the audience what it is. You know and you are leading your audience there. The reason why Shepard Smith left. The reason why Chris Wallace gets flack. They tried to be more objective and even keeled and did not follow the script. Or, they gave away the unsaid secret about the coordinated bias of the network.
To expect the media to be "fair and objective" is folly. What we should expect from them is honesty about what their bias is. What do they want us to see and WHY? What is driving them? Like you said, "Who is funding the payroll?"
The KGB no longer exists. We know that the FSB and Russian state sponsored trolls exist and they actively try to influence things here. Let's not fall into conspiracy theories. The reality is far worse than any "bad guy in black coat and hat" thriller.

(59,727 posts)Yes of course the media is corporate owned, lock, stock and barrel.
But often reality is multi-causal, more than one thing going on.
The US is such a cluster F right now, more than one set of fingerprints is obvious.
Last night on Laurence O'Donnell he had on as guest Mark Jacob from the Chicago Tribune who told of his (and other journalists) complicity in this. His tweets explain it well:

Are there ANY real journalists out there???
Mad_Machine76
(24,782 posts)they are easily swayed by the "perception" of the situation. Most people don't really even understand how Congress works, so they just hear about stuff not being passed by the Democrats (who are technically in the majority), they just roll their eyes, think both parties are corrupt and useless and stay home. Somehow, we need to figure out a way to counter these perceptions.

(60,847 posts)Our government is designed to allow a minority to stall and block any action. This is true even without the fillibuster, which puts the minority blocking function on steroids. Senate rules in many ways support a single senator being able to throw sand in the gears and wrenches in the mechanisms.
The media is controlled by monied interests who's philosophy is dominated by "if it bleeds it leads" and a need for controversy and conflict. If there is none or very little controversy or conflict they will mine it out and nurture it and create it out of whole cloth if necessary.
People who just keep their heads down and plug away at doing the work of the people are boring, and thus 'bad press.'

1. criticism/no criticism to Dems/Repub presidents AND
2. the cruel-to-be-kind cover of win-lose neoliberalism to Repubs / the disarray smear of the empathy and win-win negotiations of Democrats, AND
3. the "I ain't got to show you no stinkin' badges" / the "damn right perfect is the enemy of the good"
AND that's just three off the top of my head.
Make the Syria/Afghanistan comparison:
Did media hour-by-hour cover the evacuation of troops from Syria when TFG was president?
Did media count the 19 bases Trump abandoned there, noting the cost of billions of military equipment and aircraft he left behind for our enemies?
Did media count day-by-day the evacuation of translators and Kurdish allies?
Hell No. Media covered over and over and over what Trump said: " I've begun the drawdown of troops from Syria and there's nothing they can do about it. Nothing they can do. "
For four years,
1. Media did NOT cover over and over, "What you are seeing and reading is not what is happening."
2. Media did NOT cover the atomic bombing idea (and of hurricanes, no less) the way media covered the Howard Dean shout over and over and over.
3. Media don't need to criticize Trump if he's got a DYSFUNCTIONAL WHITE HOUSE PRESS ROOM.
THEN Alt-Right media can fill in the void left by the White House, and amplify the propagation of alt-right neonazi, plutocratic, theocratic, capitalist narratives.
Once media safely DO have a functioning White House Press Room, they swarm with their standards & acquired narratives upon the Democratic Party and press secretary like locusts.
