Kasie Hunt @kasie 1mPresident Biden says he would support changing the filibuster rules for codifying Roe v. Wade

President Biden says he favors doing away with the filibuster to codify privacy rights. Not just Roe's protections for abortion, but the full range of privacy rights including contraception & same sex marriage.
Now he needs majorities in Congress to get it done. Let's go!

Biden says he supports a carveout for altering the filibuster for codifying abortion rights
"If the filibuster gets in the way it's like voting rights, it should be -- we provide an exception for this."

(96,838 posts)for it. We have a chance for Roe, and that is what the focus needs to be, because it is highly unlikely that Manchin and Sinema will go for expansion of the SC, and there is a good chance a couple of republican Senators will go for Codifying Roe, even if Manchin and Sinema go for it, but zero chance any republican will go for expansion of the SC

(96,838 posts)for that. That is not eliminating the filibuster for every thing else.
I think Collins just might also

(4,131 posts)But we still have Democrats in the senate on record saying they dont support removing the filibuster. That means we dont have the votes to remove it. And if we dont pickup seats in November we wont have the votes for the next two years, either.
Thats just one reason why the mid terms are so critical this year.

(5,104 posts)that could really bite us in the ass one day.
A GOP dominated Senate that was unconstrained by a filibuster could make abortion illegal nationwide, end marriage equality, and engage in all sorts of dumbfuckery.
Is no one considering the downside here? Is the assumption that we will never lose the Senate?
I dunno man.

(435 posts)You are exactly right. The first thing Mitch McConnell will do is end the filibuster, simply so he CAN end access to abortion everywhere, even in the places it is still available.

(8,029 posts)The GOP will consolidate their hold on all three branches of government and with assist from the supreme court dismantle everything including voting rights ensuring a permanent GOP dictatorship.
This is no "keeping your power dry", its an existential threat to our country and democracy.

(6,038 posts)It prevents the Democrats from passing legislation that enjoys broad popular support, furthering the narrative that "The Democrats don't do anything when they get elected into office" It also protects republicans from having to vote against said popular legislation
It prevents Republicans from passing unpopular legislation, like nationwide abortion bans, things that while wildly popular among their base would result in severe pushback from the general public. Most of the things that the republican elite want isn't subject to the filibuster anyway: Tax cuts, budget issues, judicial appointments. This allows them to keep campaigning on the 'culture war' issues, without ever having to deliver, or suffer blowback for the unpopular nature of these stances.
In the long run, I think that eliminating the filibuster is a win/win move for Democrats, and lose/lose for the current christofacist embodiment of the republican party.

(1,580 posts)As he said Roe was on the boat. But it is great to be codified and explicitly stated
BlueKentuckyGirl
(435 posts)Yes, this needs to be done now! Manchin and Sinema could have prevented this whole anti-choice mess by voting to get rid of the filibuster, but they didn't. You can just bet that if Roe v Wade isn't codified now, the blue states where abortion is still protected won't be if the Democrats lose the Senate. The first thing Mitch McConnell will do is end the filibuster and abortion will be made illegal in EVERY state.
