Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsThe Slobfather IS a CON MAN. He IS NOT unaware, forgetful, sloppy, have dementia, absentminded,
careless, unfamiliar with procedures, inattentive, etc. etc. etc. HE IS A CON MAN. A Mobster. It has always worked for him. He more mistakes he made while in office because "he was an outsider", the more his cult loved him. They loved the fact that he was unaware of the ways of DC. They loved the fact that he didn't know how bureaucracy worked. The loved the fact that he was there to "shake things up".
Just yesterday, I actually heard a CNN host say "that the top secret documents were kept in a sloppy manner, kind of like my desk." So much bullshit being slung trying to excuse this CON.

(33,364 posts)He has just had people to bail him out all his life. The smart ones no longer want anything to do with him, and now he's left with people who are just as stupid, or more stupid than he is. He and his associates are con men, for sure. But, they're also The Gang Who Couldn't Shoot Straight.

(33,364 posts)The Stephen Millers, Michael Flynns, Bill Barrs, and Allen Weisselbergs. Smart people don't bankrupt casinos--where the house always wins. And, that's just one of multiple businesses he bankrupted. Smart people have no need for "fixers", like Michael Cohen. He had lots of help committing the worst crimes in US history, and as to him walking away "free," I wouldn't place any money on that bet.

But a cult leader and successful criminal.
Who else has committed the worst crimes in US history and may walk away a free man?

(11,402 posts)he's teetering on the edge of dementia. As someone in the medical field, I see too many signs. However, a lot of that could be exacerbated by his addiction to Adderall and Sudafed, which has pretty much been documented. It is possible to be all the things you mention and still have dementia. Those are not mutually exclusive. As my mother was fond of saying, "When people lose it, they just get more like themselves."
I'm glad to see others using my same nomenclature for the Slobfather. I don't know where I picked it up but it's so descriptive.

(76,036 posts)I agree that he is the very definition of a con man. Indeed, he is a perfect example of a sub-group correctly known as sociopaths. My three 2020 interviews posted on DU with Dr. Bandy Lee evidenced that.

(4,701 posts)that there are such people (monsters) that walk amongst us.
I read and watch documentaries about cults frequently. trump is very much like Charlie Manson, Jim Jones, Marshall Applewhite, Sun Myung Moon, etc. - And they had people murdering for them, committing crimes, going bankrupt, and committing suicide for their cult leaders.
I hope you don't mind that I post links to your interviews. I didn't see a link for the 3rd interview.

He's also cunning, but to a degree. It's a defining trait of Authoritarian personalities.
We just watched a 2020 Prime doc on his psychology. It was made pre-election. Near the end, a doc who looks like Wilford Brimley says "Donald Trump can't THINK. He reacts; he attacks. That's why he's unfit".
It makes you think we really dodged a bullet in 2022. If he'd been smart he'd have had a better plan.

(23,228 posts)Hey, talking head at CNN!
If you don't know the difference between a former president and yourself, your'e an idiot.
If you don't know the difference between the Top Secret documents squirreled away at Mar-a-Lago and the old newspapers, coffee cups and memos on your desk, you're an idiot.
If you don't understand that you are insignificant compared to a former (and possibly future) president, you're an idiot.
How in the world did you get your job?

(4,701 posts)CNN has fired someone I respected very much: John Harwood. He was a truth teller and very intelligent and professional. He was fired, it seemed suddenly, after truth telling about donald. CNN also fired Brian Stelter. I doubt the coincidence of these firings, considering CNN Chairman & CEO Chris Licht & CNN Board Member right wing billionaire John Malone are making no secrets about changes they would like to make.
CNN & MSNBC are still my go-to TV news sources. It does frighten me that powerful/rich people may be worming their way into another news source.

(4,701 posts)this one.) While that statement by the guest host did irk me, I feel that I opened the door to CNN slammers, and I feel a little like a "fake news" trumpster. Sometimes it doesn't take much to open the door for the "fake news" crowd.

I don't care about ones gender identification. Call yourself anything you want because it doesn't affect me except that now I know how you want to be addressed; it's not that hard to do! But I truly hate ignorance and stupidity.

(263 posts)thought he knows/knew what he is doing. That is why he tweaks his story in a day or two, always changing his story, so you can't have straight fact based conversation with him. Whenever I first heard of him many years ago, I thought he was a jerk. He keeps doing the same thing, lie and obfuscate, and it gets him out of trouble. God, I hope his technique does not work this time and he finally pays.

The sociopath boosting the psychopathy?
Maybe a mix of some smarts (ie as pointed out) cunning plus a lot of helpers, and enablers.

(24,863 posts)learning disabilities (dyslexia?), difficulty in concentrating on things he is not interested in, and just plain ignorance of the law. His success is based on his perfection of a few well-chosen and rehearsed strategies that don't depend on memory, such as extreme hyperbole, seemingly bottomless self-confidence, issuing commands to subordinates in veiled terms and seldom leaving a paper trail, surrounding himself with unquestioning flunkies (which can be both a blessing and a curse), and aggressive attacks in the media and in court. Some of his success is duet to smart crooks who support him and use him towards their own ends.
cksmithy
(263 posts)a Dr. of Psychology, once told me you don't' have to be smart to be a manipulator. Yes, he demonstrates learning disabilities, but he has learned how to get around them. His flunkies help by enabling him, but I think it has always been his desire for money and power that motivates his every move. He has no empathy.

The great mistake of the Republican Party Masters was their belief that they could control Trump, just as they controlled Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II.
Trump is clearly a dangerous sociopath who needs to be locked away somewhere. That doesn't exclude other issues.
