Totally fine when it is directed at someone I don't like/downright abhor. | |

(5,900 posts)for sticking his nose in womens health matters just as I would do if he told me I shouldnt nurse my three year old or have a home birth. He is a single man with no life experience to get involved. He is making himself the Point Man. He deserves all scorn. If I say he couldnt find a vagina it is not homophobia. Its pure scorn for his sheer nerve.

(3,031 posts)But especially for spouting up about womens issues. Pointing out that he is highly unqualified to speak about vaginas does not make one homophobic.

(7,052 posts)Or misogyny because you're a woman. Or racism because you're black. Or xenophobia because you're an immigrant.
It doesn't work that way at all. Plus, I'll bet most of the people on DU applauding what Judy Gold says are not LGBTQ. So, if you're not LGBTQ and double down on this homophobia, you need to shut the fuck up.

(24,082 posts)who is abhorrent for other reasons, or if the person is (or is perceived to be) in some way a hypocrite. This goes for other forms of bigotry, such as fatphobia and ableism. It has been explained to me that this is a Very Important tactic that absolutely must be allowed because Democrats need to stop being nice and bigotry is a fine weapon when aimed only at certain people, and that in no way does bigotry ever hurt people on our side. Also, hypocrisy is apparently the worst thing a person can do and using bigoted language to point it out is fine and admirable!! The thing is, this reasoning never seems to apply to racism (I've asked), so I guess the whole thing is just beyond me.

(7,052 posts)That sounds about right. So, we can't call Herschel Walker the "n" word on DU, but we can mock Graham's alleged sexuality because we don't like him. Makes so much sense.

(20,987 posts)Fat-shaming is still cool here, as far as I can tell. In fact, ANY kind of denigration based on physical characteristics seems to get a pass (except -mostly- skin color).
Putdowns based on someone's spiritual beliefs/lack thereof seem to go down well also.
And let's not forget the rationalist vs more-things-in-heaven-and-earth wars that erupt from time to time. (I can't remember whether "w**" ever made it to the TOSable list.)
People are gonna find ways to insult people, and a lot of time they're gonna fall back on differences to do so, even though "This person is a fundamentally awful person" works perfectly well.
We will never eliminate all of it, that's why we have TOS, juries, mods, and hopefully, continual small progress, even if it will never be enough/fast enough for all of us.
But we have to keep on calling it out when we see it.
