We stand a good chance of holding it. Current projections are 218-217. If we do happen to lose it , it will be with a very slim margin.
If it comes to this Nancy Pelosi is a much better leader than McCarthy . She was able to deliver a lot with just a few seats margin.
McCarthy won't be able to control his side given how many of them are just there to fling poop instead of legislating . Of course , President Biden or the senate that I believe we are going to hold will also be able to stop any bill in its tracks.
The only thing they will be able to do is start stupid congressional investigations that will go nowhere other than making it even more obvious to voters that the GOP is incapable to govern ahead of 2024.
Make no mistake. It was a huge loss for the GOP.

(3,830 posts)But only when they know their vote is futile.
Like the Affordable Care Act. When President Obama was in office, the GOP led House voted unanimously
to repeal it dozens of times. When the GOP finally had the House, Senate, and Oval Office They didn't have the votes.
GOP Reps. from more moderate districts won't be able to toe the MAGA line.

(18,925 posts)When McCarthy was making his dastardly little plans, he was counting on having a nice, fat GOP majority to work with, not a hairsbreadth margin! (And that's assuming they win the House at all, which is yet to be determined.)
So yeah, I'm pretty sure old Kev has a sad today. That's what he gets for counting his chickens!

(3,213 posts)We're losing like 5 seats in New York because the court threw out the maps, while Florida got to keep theirs.
If we win Bobo's seat, we need to sweep the tables in California to maybe get a 1 or 2 seat majority.
And the Senate is still in the air because of AZ, GA, and NV.

(30,633 posts)They did not impeach Obama.
McCarthy knows impeachment without strong evidence would be political suicide. They won't impeach Biden. They will have sham investigations, beginning with "Election Integrity"
They will have investigations to make Democrats "look bad"

(17,789 posts)I don't think the GOP cares about maintaining any veneer of credibility. I've seen no evidence they do.
No, they did not impeach Mr Obama, but the GOP is considerably more radical now than they were just a few short years ago.
I agree, the sham "investigations" will be legion.

(44,806 posts)They may have trouble getting every repub to vote to impeach Biden. While there aren't many R's left that haven't lost their minds, it would only take a few who were concerned that pursuing impeachment would hurt them two years from now when they run again.
Personally, I think pursuing impeachment would backfire on the Repubs going into 2024.

(7,794 posts)From that pulpit they will shamelessly fling their lies, chair the various committees and deny the introduction of facts in their complicity on 1/6/2021. In fact, the whole goddamn "investigation" of 1/6 will be said to conclude that it was just another day in D.C.
Further, the stakes for the safety of Democratic representatives will be raised to easily foreseeable heights. Their new norm will make the attack on Paul Pelosi's into a justifiable action required to stop Democrat's attempts to maintain civilization.
There would have been no possibility of the Houses' degeneration had TFG and those still at-large criminals in his cabal been indicted as justice demands and has demanded for 22 almost entirely squandered months. The failure of the DOJ to bring clarity, if not closure, to this is as blatant and disingenuous an act of official malfeasance that there has been since the Iran Contra days. It has enabled the enemy to double down on their public lies with the effect of emboldening fascist elements within the media to their disinformation while encouraging weak-minded voters to "give MAGA another chance".

Given how close the margin will be if they take over the house I think they will not try to impeach Biden despite the hollering from MTG and the other loons. The sane Republicans know it is a loser and turns off swing voters in 2024.

Nowadays, conservatism doesn't matter atall. Perhaps libertarianism covers some of them but for most its just greed and lust for power. No over-arching ideology, just personal egos (and taking orders from someone....)
