Leader Jeffries has an interesting decision to make.

Do we help the gop install McHenry as a pro tempore speaker with extended powers or do we not ?

On one hand, that could be an opportunity to extract concessions and get the ball running for urgent matters like aid to Israel, Ukraine and the looming budget shutdown.

On the other hand, can we really trust the gop to hold up their side of the bargain? They reneged on the deal that was struck after the debt ceiling drama which spelled out spending levels for the next two years.

That's above my pay grade. I am glad we have a competent leader at the helm.

1. I think they actually have to elect a speaker, I don't see this extending his powers

It doesn’t seem constitutional, and how does it work in the line of succession?. Just go ahead and nominate and elect him speaker. They can do their motion to vacate whenever they feel like it. But they have to promise to bring bills to the floor.

5. I think the Dems are going to do it.

The top Democrat in the House — Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the leading vote-getter in both speaker votes thanks to his united caucus — said before Wednesday’s vote that “all options are on the table.”

He reiterated that House Democrats have two goals: preventing Mr. Jordan from obtaining the speakership and keeping the government running.

The powers given to bow tie boy will have to be spelled out, and time limits. Magats must agree to funding the government and agree to money for Ukraine, or no deal.

No way give him power until Jan. 2024, it will need to be incremental. Give him 3 weeks to start.

6. Don't trust them on any concessions, and McHenry is Karl Rove lite.

Jeffries has gained the most votes for Speaker in US history. If any concessions are made, it should be on their side. Helping them now will only get us a worse speaker than Kevin McCarthy was for America. Everyone they have put up so far would happily shut down the government if they don't get what they want, and would refuse to hear anything the Democrats might propose. Well, maybe Boehner wouldn't shut down the government, but he'd be the only one.
I haven't seen any actual reasonable leader types from the GOP house members since around 1996 after Newt pretty much drove any GOP moderates out.

We need to take the high road and let those delusional hypocrites implode on themselves.

Take what we can get. We are in the minority. So, anything is better than nothing.

11. What Jeffries needs to do is what he is doing: hold the line, keep Dems together

So far the MagaGOP are offering the Dems bupkis. Their deals are bogus, their word is worthless, and Dems are being given the “choice” between a guy with a shiv and a guy with big fists.

And then they go on FOX and whine that it was the Dems who spoiled the party.

No, just no.

13. Regardless, the repubs have the majority.

I don't see any reason to support them and their agenda. Jordan, ergo trump, are whispering directions. The constitutionality is suspect. The repubs know what's happening and refuse to step up for the country. If they did, they would be excoriated.
They can't elect a speaker because there is no one in their party willing to defend the country over their need for support from the haters of democrats and democracy.
If we give them an escape, we will only give them fuel to go on.
They are opposed to government; evident by their inability to govern.
Their voters don't get that.
Let them fester some more.
