Unfortunately for people like us, because of the current laws in the state of Texas, that was only the beginning of this nightmare. Jess (my wife) had an "incomplete miscarriage", and what needed to happen, what was best for HER, and her health, was to terminate the pregnancy, and get the baby out.
The doctor gave her a medication that would move this process along, and sent her home. Where, apparently we would be handling it ourselves. We were told it might take a couple of attempts before it worked.
I'll let you decide how you feel about that.
After a long, painful night of the equivalent of early labor, the baby was still with her. So, we went back to the Emergency Center to get the 2nd dose. A new doctor was on call. He was an older man. You could hear him in the hallway as he said, "I'm not giving her a pill so she can go home and have an ab*rtion!". Being well aware that our baby no longer had a heartbeat. Then, he came into the room to say, and I quote: "Considering the current stance. I'm not going to prescribe you this pill". Then, just sent us on our way.
The "CURRENT STANCE"?! Did he really just say that?!
No one should ever have to hear their wife say: "Get this dead baby out of me!".
Can you even imagine how that must feel?
The pain, and the bleeding continued. So, we decided to go to another hospital, about an hour away. There was a female doctor on call there, and we thought we might have better luck.
I should probably mention, the procedure to get the baby out is called a D & C. It's scary, & traumatizing, but sometimes necessary in situations like ours. Especially in emergency circumstances.
So we get to the next hospital. They take Jess in, ask her a bunch of questions, do a new scan... confirm that the baby is still there, with no heartbeat, and then disappear... for hours. Only to come back in and keep asking the same questions over and over. It's becoming clear that they're primary concern is NOT my wife's health. Instead, they seem to be worried about the legalities involved.
So, they decide it is not "enough of an emergency" to perform the D & C.
They do, however, prescribe another, stronger, final dose of the medication for us to try again... at home.
So, we go home to try again. Another long day/night of early labor pains. Only to discover my wife UNCONSCIOUS in the bathroom. Having to pick my wife's cold, limp body off of that bathroom floor, not sure if I was about to lose her, is something I will NEVER forget.
She had to be rushed to the hospital.
By this point she had lost so much blood, and bodily fluid, her body gave out.
They were able to stabilize her, give her the fluids she needed, and we came back home yesterday afternoon. We were also able to confirm that our baby was no longer with her.
Now, not only do we have to live with the loss of our baby... we have to live with the nightmare of what we just experienced because of political and religious beliefs. MY WIFE'S HEALTH SHOULD HAVE COME FIRST. PERIOD!
God knows what mental and emotional damage this has done.
If you consider yourself a staunch "pro-lifer" ... 1) You've never been through what we just went through, and 2) You should take a long, hard look in the mirror and reevaluate your reasons for supporting such a cold, barbaric, ignorant point of view.
It's not that black & white, and it's never going to be.
If you think your "Pray To End Ab*rtion" sign in your yard is "Christian", I suggest you revisit the teachings of Jesus and try again. If you support these laws that make ab*rtion illegal, and result in people being put through what we just were, you should be ashamed of yourself. I've never been so angry, or heartbroken... and the devastation I'm feeling must pale in comparison to what my poor wife is feeling.

(71,036 posts)My doctor being a kind soul sedated me so I didn't suffer, we had a small service-just family. This was in PA. The last one I lost was in GA where I had inadvertently hired a right-to-life OBGYN...he nearly killed me. If my husband had not got on a plane that morning when I told him I was in trouble and come home and gone immediately to the hospital, I would be dead. I was left unattended and bleeding out while the good Doctor waited for hormones to drop (which can take weeks by the way). I had a complete transfusion, platelets, and a DNC...was in the hospital for three weeks. I would have left four young children behind and was left infertile. When I went back to the doctor mostly to yell at him...he didn't even remember my name. I am so sorry.

(22,850 posts)In an even minimally functioning state, that fiend would've lost his medical license for life - followed by reckless endangerment charges (among others!) plus a big, fat emotional distress lawsuit.
But it was Jaw-ga - a very beautiful asylum taken over by the inmates, so it would seem. And the worst of the inmates to boot.
So thanks for sharing that; it musn't have been easy to write.

(36,186 posts)It goes to show that these rightwing "anti-abortion" laws are really misogynistic and they can lead to deadly consequences. Luckily you and your husband were able to get proper pre-natal care through your own ingenuity. The state of Texas is doing its best to kill women of child-bearing age.
I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm glad you survived.

(13,736 posts)I am so sorry that happened to you. When I miscarried almost fourteen years ago, I had it easy here in NYC. Caring doctors who made sure I knew what my options were (waiting it out for natural expelling or D&C.). When I chose the latter, I had kind and caring doctors walk me through it all, including hugging me when it was over. I truly wanted that baby, and the miscarriage was heartbreaking. But once I lost the pregnancy, I wanted the whole experience over ASAP.

(15,113 posts)right. Until it happens to their family, they have no clue. What they dont seem to understand is it might make it more difficult for that woman to get pregnant in the future. It also could be so traumatic for them they dont want to try again.

(17,254 posts)The whole abortion debate was if there is a viable heartbeat. If there is no longer a heartbeat then what this poor woman endured should have been seen as a medical procedure.

Many religions teach that the fetus doesn't become human - in other words the soul doesn't enter the body - until the baby takes its first breath at birth. This is even taught in the Bible.
For ultra-conservatives (including Catholics) to have perverted this teaching into the creation of laws that control the freedom of women is just mind-blowing.

(19,054 posts)I thought the heartbeat was their sacred litmus test. I thought their stance was "No heartbeat? No problem. That means the fetus is dead and there's no reason it can't be removed from the woman's body."
Turns out they're even crazier than I thought they were. A lot crazier. Wtaf.

(15,221 posts)The law bans abortions, period. You know those idiot lawmakers haven't the faintest idea that removing a dead fetus from a woman's body is an abortion, and that the law they wrote makes it a crime to do that.

Its maddening. Hopefully, sharing your story will help.

Just like during the pandemic, the GOP elite told everyone else not to wear masks or get vaccines.
And watched people struggle to find a bed in a hospital.
The GOP elite all wore masks, their kids in private school wore masks.
And were all vaccinated when it was available, probably before the general public.

The book of Hosea seems to be especially keen of killing fetuses when they were inside the 'wrong' woman. To wit:
Yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb. Hosea 9:16
Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up. Hosea 13:16

(11,821 posts)I can't express how badly I feel for you and, as you say, your wife especially. I'm struggling with whether I'm going to tell my wife about this. One of the hats she's worn was that of a super-successful teen pregnancy program leader, and also once facilitated (it that's the right word) an abortion. To say she has strong feelings in this area is wide of the mark. Know that she is four square with you, no matter what.
How can "the shining city on the hill," the "leader of the free world" POSSIBLY be in this deplorable state? If the religious maniacs ever truly hold the reins of power, America will be all but lost.
Look at what they've managed with mere influence.

ShazzieB
(19,054 posts)Then they are shocked and appalled, because they assumed their state's abortion ban would "of course" have exceptions to protect women's lives.
I've lost count of how many stories I've read about woman who were absolutely blindsided when they faced a situation like this.
I think there needs to be a massive public education effort to inform people about what these laws really mean.
onecaliberal
(36,594 posts)We absolutely need to educate women. Their very lives could depend on it. If women there are too poor to drive out of the state or fly, then theyre going to die.
NanaCat
(2,332 posts)Because they don't have the resources to leave. Poverty is higher than average in most of these states, even for people with jobs.
It's easy to say get out--when you're in the income bracket to do that. It's much harder to do when you're not.

(95,574 posts)Its another way that this situation is, to me, chillingly reminiscent of the lifeways of the old slave states: poor people must stay poor and downtrodden otherwise how are we going to know that we are better than them ?
And since they cant precisely enslave black people any more, how about de facto enslaving anyone with a uterus?

(11,165 posts)No problem getting the procedure at all. There was a lot of pressure to have me have a religious service and burial for what turned out to be decidual tissue with no fetal remains. I continued to decline the option.
Evidently someone at the hospital did it anyway? I was asked a year later if I wanted to attend a service for my lost child??? I was confused as my current son was fighting was his life in the NICU and thought perhaps he had died overnight! I was livid when I found out what they were referring to. I had been less than 10 weeks along during that prior miscarriage.
Anyway, I thought what I went through was pretty horrible. I cannot imagine being denied the D and C.
radical noodle
(8,876 posts)but that's not true. Pre-Roe there wasn't a discussion about embryos or fetuses being persons. Miscarriages did not make you a suspect of a murder. D&Cs were routinely done when necessary without having to jump through hoops. They're taking us back to a time before reproductive care was available at all... early 1800s.
In 1965 I had a miscarriage at home. I had been 5--1/2 months pregnant. Two things stand out in my mind as our country spirals down into the crazy-town place where a dead fetus is more important than its living mother. First, no one questioned my need for a D&C. Second, when asked what we should do with the tiny corpse, the doctor said to just "throw it in a ditch somewhere." (BTW, we didn't do that, we buried it in a little tin button box in the back yard at my husband's parents' home.)
They're taking women to a place that had thus far been unimaginable. It's like the Twilight Zone.
Freethinker65, I'm so sorry for your loss.
This insanity must stop.

(6,675 posts)a doctor sees in my records that I had 2 spontaneous abortions, which is the medical term for miscarriages. He chewed me out for paying for those 'illegal procedures'. A medical doctor didn't know the term for miscarriage. Years later when I was pregnant they had me come in weekly so they could be aware if I started to miscarry. Doctors!!!
