Mixed emotions...

My eldest nephew just graduated from high school today. I had to work and was unable to attend the ceremony, but later was able to watch the video on YouTube. I am such a sap that I immediately burst into tears at the beginning strains of "Pomp and Circumstance" and did so again when my nephew, tall and handsome in his cap and gown, accepted his diploma.

Despite the pride and happiness I felt watching him and his classmates achieve this milestone, I also felt despair. In a few months, these kids' seemingly bright future may be no more. They will be voting for the first and maybe last time. How many of them have parents and other relatives who are staunch Republicans like my nephew's parents? How many come from MAGA and white religious nationalism families?

My heart is broken. How can so many seemingly kind, smart and sane people continue to support a rapist and convicted felon??? 💔

Will be going on with their lives and experience for themselves what they want for their future. Give your nephew all the love and encouragement you can and let him know he can depend on you. I say that because of your reaction to seeing him graduate and your hope for him to make the right choices. Your post touched me as I also think you’re a good person who loves their nephew. 🫶

He turns 18 next week, so we will have a combo graduation/birthday party for him. It seems like just yesterday I saw him for the first time...wrapped up in a bundle and wearing a blue hat. *sob*
