He seemed like a different man, even reading off the teleprompter with twice the conviction.
With several very public performances, many not scripted, Biden will have rehabilitated himself. People will see him diferently.
Unfortunately for Trump they will remember his lies as well. Nothing will help that. And last night baked that in.
Therefore, in the long run, last night might have been positive,

(1,229 posts)it's a new day and despite what all the chicken littles are saying, last night won't define Biden as he WAS low energy but we know the reason for that. Will all the lies and douchiness define the orange shithead? It should....
HandmaidsTaleUntold
(406 posts)But please spare us the chicken little analogies. Coulda shoulda woulda doesnt win elections. People can forget a poor debate performance. If its a one off. Trump smells blood now duh. You dont think that bully is gonna keep capitalizing on this???? Over and over and over. I about the one thing independents are worries about...Joes age??? We cant win if we arent realistic. That wasnt just low energy. Bidens campaign better figure something out quick. Time for Obama to get loud. He said he still supports Joe. But having to even say that is a problem.

(20,315 posts)Ironically, after all the talk of TCF "throwing" the debate to Biden, the opposite actually happened.
How? Look at Biden's performance today, as well as his performance last night after the debate. Like night and day.
Why? Momentum. We need the momentum in the fall up to Election Day. So, look for Democrats to keep a low profile until the convention, and then suddenly ramping it up afterwards.
And TSF will go into the next debate thinking he will be facing a weak opponent, and WHAM! he gets blindsided by a suddenly energized Dark Brandon!

Trump, as usual, is oblivious (along with most of the GOP, so it seems) to this concept and due to his narcissistic personality tries to be at peak at all times. Weve seen this does not wear well with a diverse coalition and only works with a cult.
President Biden appears to be very aware of this and has many successful campaigns under his belt.

(12,394 posts)Not so many of them are likely to be seeing local rallies on C-Span or whatever. (Nor are rally clips as likely to show up on the news or go viral on social media... except when they're bad.)
Or to put it differently, arguably, you need to reach that 47 million person audience in order to reach the persuadable people we need to reach with "the other Biden."
I think a lot is going ride on the VP debate, and any future presidential debate that may happen. Because the people we need to reach are the ones who are not so engaged on a day-to-day basis. The ones who are engaged are, for the most part, unpersuadable.
The NC rally videos already have half the debate views

(5,369 posts)Other than revealing who the bedwetters and bad faith actors are among "Democrats," I don't think last night - to the sorrow of many of those worthies - is going to have too much resonance for Biden. But Trump - whew. He was terrible. And there's nothing he can do about it. That's just him.
HandmaidsTaleUntold
(406 posts)If someone observes us tanking they are bedwetters or unworthy? This isnt a special club for those needing an ego boost. We want to win at all costs especially after losing in 2016 which allowed Trump to even get to this place. I was shocked at how Joe looked. I thought he would destroy Trump. Magical thinking wont win. Or hoping people will just forget. How did the debate preppers not see this coming. Utter failure. We better act quick.

Biden-Harris 2024
Last night, I spent 90 minutes debating on a stage with a guy who has all the morals of an alley cat. I mean, did you see Donald Trump last night?
He must have set a new record for the number of lies ever told in a single debate.
He lied about what a great economy he created, when we all remember the pandemic.
He lied about how great he was for veterans, when we can recall how he called veterans who had given their lives for this country suckers and losers.
And he even lied about how he had nothing to do with January 6th.
But we all saw it with our own eyes. We saw the mob attack the Capitol. We saw the police being attacked. The Capitol ransacked.
Folks, for all of Trumps lies last night, we did learn some important truths.
We learned he is still proud of being the person who killed Roe v. Wade.
We learned that he wants another giant tax cut for the very wealthy and biggest corporations.
And that hell cut your Medicare, your Social Security, and cut your health care to pay for it.
Most dangerously -- though -- we learned again that Donald Trump will not respect the outcome of this years election.
Donald Trump showed us who he is last night. We have to believe him.
I know you understand there is too much at stake to leave this election up to chance, so I have to ask: Will you make another $25 contribution to Kamalas and my campaign today? It's going to take a heck of a lot of resources to defeat Trump again. We need you by our side.
I know Im not a young man. I dont walk as easily as I used to. I dont speak as smoothly as I used to. I dont debate as well as I used to.
I also know how to tell the truth. I know right from wrong. I know how to do this job. I know how to get things done.
And I know -- like millions of Americans know -- when you get knocked down, you get back up.
I would not be running again if I didnt believe with all my heart and soul that I can do this job. Because quite frankly the stakes are too high.
Donald Trump poses the gravest threat to our democracy Ive ever seen in my lifetime.
He will destroy our democracy. I will defend it. So, are you with me?
Youre one of my campaigns strongest donors. Itd mean a lot to me to see another donation from you come through today.
Donald Trump and I will meet on the debate stage again in September. Until then, Ill never stop fighting for families like yours just as I have every day of my career.
I hope youll keep the faith and join me out on the stump.
See you out there,
Joe
P.S. My team tells me that we had the best day of fundraising yesterday. I couldnt be more grateful for folks like you have pitched in what they can so far. Were counting on even more donations from folks in your town to come in today. If you can spare $5, $10, or even $25 -- pitch in now. It will make a difference. My word as a Biden.
My dad used to have an expression -- 'It's the lucky person who gets up in the morning, puts both feet on the floor, knows what they are about to do, and thinks it still matters.' Your support matters. Your donation matters. -- Joe Biden

(12,394 posts)I think a problem there is that, for the more casual viewer (those debate-watchers who don't follow politics much and who are presumably most of the potentially persuadable), they will need further education to fully understand the extent of TFG's lies, but they need no further evidence whatsoever (i.e. beyond what they saw and heard with their own eyes and ears) to believe that Biden is feeble. IOW, they need to see proof of Biden's competence, as you suggest, but I don't think you can count on everyone "remembering TFG's lies" or even knowing just how many there were, because these more casual, more persuadable viewers are less likely to know just how much he was lying, and they are not so easily reached outside the big event. We need to reach the proverbial "low information voters" because the more engaged voters have probably almost universally already made up their minds. And by definition, these voters are harder to reach. After all, if they were engaged, they wouldn't be low information voters.
What we really needed was for the TFG's other court cases to come to trial before the election. I"m still hoping that somehow, at least one will. Because I think that's the kind of thing that could really move the needle.

Metaphorical
(2,346 posts)We had a reality check last night, but I think people are overreacting.
1. Biden looked good afterwards, and he's knocking it out of the park with his rallies. The sound quality of his mic wasn't good when he started, and studio lighting is going to make an older white man with an orange-spray-painted tan and a toupe look better than an older white man with white hair. We've seen Trump at his worst, and he's a fat, old, white man with wispy hair, but like everything else about him, his physical appearance is a media lie.
2. Trump did not in fact surprise anyone. He was on the defensive most of the night, he lied with every statement, and toward the end he was heading to incomprehensibility. The MSM set the expectations in Trump's favor because he didn't have to be truthful, didn't have to even make any sense so long as he could last through a 90 minute marathon. Biden, on the other hand, had to both remain attentive to the questions, be truthful, seem dignified while doing it, had to deal with a very unpredictable opponent, and not to appear to be old. He blew the last, though I think he hit the other three.
3. This was not a boxing match. Biden wasn't going to knock Trump out. Trump wasn't going to go full psycho on stage (though he came closer than most of his handlers would like), Biden was going to be at his best by showing Trump as Trump truly was.
4. The biggest beneficiary last night was probably Robert Kennedy, Jr. I had a zoom call this morning with someone who is definitely a left-libertarian (yes, we have them on our side as well, sadly). He was talking about how he was all in on Kennedy at this point. I think Democrats will support Biden regardless, the Republicans have mostly gone full Magat, and the independents are likely to split three ways. The key is that my acquaintance wasn't going to vote for Biden regardless, and had been leaning towards Trump until last night.
All things considered, last night hurt Biden, but I think it will hurt Trump more in the long run, because I see Kennedy siphoning off more votes (considerably) from Trump than he will from Biden. We are about five weeks out from the conventions. Biden has the opportunity to reburnish his image, but the message I'm hearing is that neither of them did very well, and it will be a lot harder for Trump to walk away from the convictions.
One final point - at this stage in the game, Romney was looking increasingly likely that he would win the presidency, especially after a disastrous debate with Obama, who is in my opinion one of the best orators we've had in decades. The commentary I'm hearing today sounds very familiar, and I don't think the MSM was any less toxic (especially to a black man).

(27 posts)I wish the talking heads of the news networks and worried democrats would do their homework and read about the first debate between Rnald Reagan and Walter Mondale in 1984, the year that reagan who was President at the time was running for re-election. At that debate Reagan looked and performed terrible almost like what President Biden looked like last Thursday night. Everybody then was wondering if Reagan was already too old to run again for re-election just like some people are doing now with Biden.
Reagan was not only re-elected that year but it was a complete blowout of Walter Mondale that November.
So dear fellow democrats, quit worrying and continue your support of Joe Biden. Reagan did not have near as good an economy as Biden has now and he was running against a normal, competent and reasonably well liked opponent in Mondale. And he aced the election. Our Joe Biden will do as well. He had a bad night last Thursday but at the end of the day he has proved to be one hell of a competent president and he is running against a convicted felon, sexual predator of women and morbidly fat asshole who has the IQ of a rock.

(2,655 posts)Far from it. My point is that we need to stop looking at things through rose colored glasses. Denying what we saw or justifying it away with excuses like a "cold" is fine for spinning press narratives, but as his core supporters, lets be real about the situation.
I'm going to do everything I'm capable of to reelect him. But I am not going to lie to myself just because it makes me feel better.

(19,489 posts)Biden can reverse the impression of the debates by appearing often. unscripted, and strong, but Trump can never shake the impression of a liar, in fact he'll just lie some more if he tries, and the impression was solidified Thursday night due to the number of viewers and the list of lies fact-checkers provided post-debate.
Making it important that we know and repeat their findings. Here's a good summary:
