General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSo what did Vance have to do to get the VP slot?
We know the competition was fierce, with people pulling all kinds of stunts to impress Trump.
And I am sure there was backroom wheeling and dealing.
We know it is not about who could do the best job.
Or who could get the most votes (that would be Nikki Haley.)
So how much cash did Vance have to pony up?
And what else did he have to promise Trump to get the job?
No way Trump would bestow something so valuable without a quid pro quo.

Theil is worth $8 billion.
He can well afford one billion dollars.
And if Vance makes it to WH and Thiel to the Supreme Court he can earn back his investment easily.

(751 posts)I mean, would Peter Thiel divorce his husband, or would already-married gay couples get grandfathered in?
Honestly, it would be easier for him to just hire someone to do all the scutwork of sitting and hearing cases a few months out of the year.

(59,727 posts)The GOP elite does not care about abortion, LGBT, etc issues.
It is just red meat for the cult members.
And the GOP is immune from any laws and rules.
They are exempt of course.
They use the laws to protect and enrich themselves.
And to punish and control everyone else.
But yes you have a point.
Thiel is rich enough to just hire a lackey to sit on the bench
and do the dirty work. Like he is doing with Vance.

(121,502 posts)Rubio has a kind of wimpy vibe and Burgum is just bland. Vance is as mean as a snake so he's perfect, and never mind all the B.S. about TFG wanting to tone down the rhetoric and "bring the country together." He was never going to even try, because his base doesn't want all that kind and friendly stuff. They want mean; that's why they liked TFG in the first place.

However, there are many mean nasty people Trump could have chosen.

and I don't really believe this one yet, but if I had to choose one, this would make the most sense:
Whether or not Trump was neutralized, the attempt could be viewed as a win-win situation for certain members of the GOP. As a martyr it would energize the party to support someone like Vance.
Vance seems to be associated with donors who have incredible financial resources and could cover the tracks.
The shooter seems to fit the profile of a "never Trumper" Republican.
There may have been a pause before giving the go-ahead to kill the shooter who was spotted by counter-snipers. This is likely under investigation.
That's all I can say on the matter...
On edit: I should point out that according to Snopes, the 4chan post by the man who claims to be the counter-sniper is "unfounded" and the police depts involved have no record of anyone with the name given:

(59,727 posts)When it comes to Trump, Putin, the GOP nothing is off the table in terms of possibilities.
Most law abiding people have a very hard time wrapping their heads around what these people
are capable of. Trump is a ruthless criminal and those are the kind of people he partners with.
The stakes are very high and they will do anything to get what they want.
Money and power. Everything else is just collateral damage.
I agree, there are serious questions about the rally and what exactly went down.
The puzzling gap between identifying a shooter on a roof and neutralization is one of them.
One of Vance's backer is worth $8B and very ruthless.

(1,326 posts)Just read article on breaking news form that the majority of people are willing to fight against tfg than for him. Not that I want that. These magots have been wanting violence for years and I think its closer than people want to believe. I worked with them at the plant I used to work at. They are mainly ex-Navy but some of the other branches also. They are scary.
But not going down that path. I truly believe that Biden has this. I had a supervisor at work and he always told me that people will do the right thing.
