Hes done GREAT things for Americans and for peace in the world.
Hes gotten more done in three-and-a-half years than any other President I can think of. (And I just squeaked in beyond my 60s).
And hes been faithful, true, and honest - as a man, a husband, a father, and a world leader.
And were all supposed to just kick him to the corner now? And without so much as a single heartfelt thank you?
This makes me so mad I could just SCREAM!

(5,916 posts)They have a mighty piss poor way of showing it. He deserves far more respect than he is being shown. And the undignified way they have handled this whole Biden must go debacle is just shameful. If the consequences werent so risky, if I was in President Bidens shoes, Id tell them all where they can shove it.

What has prevailed in the thinking of many prominent Democrats is it's no fault of his own, but something none of us can avoid.... which is the eventual impacts of aging.

(24,796 posts)is that we didn't have this discussion/debate during the primary season. Now, we're talking about getting rid of our presumptive nominee FOUR MONTHS BEFORE THE ELECTION when he was almost literally just as old!

Someone needs to explain to me why 81/82 is soooooooooooooooooooo much older than 78.
The entire administration is responsible for leading the country, and to try to pretend that the POTUS alone and in isolation must make EVERY decision and run EVERY element of the government is bullshit too.
The higher you go in any organization, the less actual work you do and the more responsibility for delegation and oversight you assume. Trump showed that he was only adept at destruction and tear down, Biden? The polar opposite.

(35,736 posts)Although I didn't express it at the time - because any expression of doubts about Biden was immediately blasted as ageist - I was concerned at the time. But it was a given that once he decided to run, he would be essentially unopposed.
And there wasn't any concrete evidence - at that time - that he was aging rapidly. The debate performance, his reaction to his debate performance (deny, deflect, excuse), and the observations of people who see him on a regular basis suggest that may have changed.
So the timing sucks. But pretending the conversation doesn't need to happen serves no one, and having it now is better than having it 2 months from now.

(35,736 posts)It is about what the country needs. That may be Biden. It may not. But the presidency isn't about rewarding someone for what they have done in the past. It is about choosing someone for their ability to lead the country in the next 4 years. That definitely isn't Trump. So we need to be very sure it is our candidate - and that whoever that is can beat Trump.

I'd LOVE to see it. I think she has what it takes, and she is and has been a TERRIFIC Vice President. She's gone around the world waving America's banner, and she knows all the players. And she's got a smart, level head on her shoulders, LOTS of experience, and a VERY respectable resume. I already expect to vote for her at some point - maybe sooner than later.
If things turn out that Biden steps away and Kamala takes over, well then, SHE'S got my vote, TOO!!!

Self Esteem
(1,823 posts)Which has been the root problem from the start:
So we need to be very sure it is our candidate - and that whoever that is can beat Trump.
None of these people who have attacked Joe, demanded he step down, have presented anywhere near an answer to this point. It's stupidity run amok. It's amateur hour here. They've laid out zero plan on what they'll do if Biden steps down and they have not given us any reason to believe that plan will be better than if the entire party had rallied around Biden after his debate performance.
It's been three fucking weeks and they still haven't presented anything close to a plan. Yet we're expected to trust them? Are you kidding me?
We're supposed to just dump Biden, despite the fact he's still polling within the MOE of Trump in pretty much every major swing state he needs to win - and this after a month of bad publicity - on the hope that the Democrats, who have looked utterly incompetent in messaging here, will somehow come up with a better plan?
Don't you think you should have a plan in place before you force Biden out?
Just an absolute shit-show and we're expected to trust these people to not fuck it up in the next month. Yeesh.

(3,312 posts)Would a replacement candidate be able to reach their potential with the following factors feeding into the equation:
1) Resentment and a gut-wrenching loss of enthusiasm from regular party members who are appalled with the way this situation has been handled.
2) The Kamala question: Will Ms. Harris be deemed strong enough to run on her own? If she is shuttled aside, then what happens to the party's base?
3) Who gets to choose the new nominee? What voice will regular party members have in the selection? What voice will traditional Democratic constituencies have in the selection?
4) How much negative impact does the situation have on small donations? On voter turnout? On the overall future of the Democratic party?
The transition to a robust campaign would require the unmitigated endorsement, indeed, the enthusiastic approval, of both President Biden and Vice President Harris, if she is not the replacement candidate. It will require all-out campaigning by President Biden, Vice President Harris, President Obama, President Clinton, and specific and sustained outreach to the Democratic base by some of the leading protagonists in this drama, including Nancy Pelosi, Adam Schiff, Charles Schumer, Hakeem Jeffries, and any Democratic politician who has called for President Biden's departure.
And remember that brilliant remark in this thread about how fascists thrive on creating despondency in their rivals. Anger fuels despondency, too. We all know that, at the end of the day, we must unite, whether you are comfortable or come from modest means, because the ascension of Donald Trump is worse than the Joe Biden situation and the current perceived gap between the party's elites and its rank-and-file.

My proudest moment was voting for a female candidate, Mrs. Clinton, a wow I sincerely hope in "old age" that I make it to a I for another woman in my lifetime.
I am furious with the "mess" of this year's Presidential election, both Republicans already-established choices that should not even be eligible for election to this high office, and separately it appears there may be a final effort here to remove current President Biden from the Democrat ballot.
A wishing and hoping comment at last. I WILL VOTE. that is certain. I have sometimes shared who I voted for before but not always, since it is a personal decision.
This year, I will absolutely share with my friends and Democratic Underground who I actually did vote for on election day. I will hope we are happy with the future of our nation.

With republicans it's particularly prevalent. Look at J.D. Vance, one of many who was a never trumper and now thinks trump's the Orange Jesus.

(266 posts)I'm feeling the same disappointment as you, Calimary. Jamie Raskin is from my state and I have such deep respect and affection for him. He is a man of deep reflection and compassion. Angry as I am with all those who are calling for Biden to step down, I simply cannot believe that they are deliberately seeking to harm our party or destroy our campaign to maintain control of the White House. This is so very painful for us all. We love Joe. We love his lifelong dedication to our country and her people. We owe him a huge debt of gratitude. We believe he can win in 2024. Right now, we are all afraid. We know how dire the 2024 election will be. I intend to stand by our voters' choice. In time, I'm certain the way forward will be made clear. Perhaps, what we need to remember as we try to control our emotions and calm troubled minds and hearts, is that we are devoted to democracy and to the ideals which are foundational to the dreams and sacrifices that shaped the creation of the U.S. Our commitment is far greater than our dedication to any one man. Whatever the outcome, nothing will ever diminish the esteem and appreciation which we feel for President Biden. Let us not discourage or castigate one another. Remember our values and our principles and unite in whatever manner in which we may be called upon to preserve and protect what each of us holds so dear. I am hopeful that Biden will choose to remain as our candidate. If he does not, every bit of anger and resentment I currently feel will be channeled into keeping Trump and his criminal cohort from getting their grubby hands on the levers of power and governance. We can settle the accounts of our differences with leaders of our own party once we win in November.

He was leaning in and engaged .There was the President of The United States talking with a man on the opposite end of society, yet you could see how he was relating to him as simply another human being.
That is who Joe Biden is, a man with an enormous heart.
It is painful to be witnessing this. I don't know what is the right thing for him to do. What I do know is that Nancy Pelosi was highly respected during her time as Speaker not only because of her political talent, but because she.understood the numbers. If what we are reading is true, then she is convinced the numbers aren't there and that he will lose. I believe her. We always believed her in the past, why wouldn't we believe her now.
Trump and his even more extremist running mate, J.D. Vance and their MAGA cohorts will make this country unrecognizable. That makes this election different from all the others in the past. If the republican nominee was someone like Mitt Romney, we would know the country we know would still be here in four years. That isn't true this time.

I'm particularly disappointed in Democrats who want to have it both ways: Kick him off the ticket and insist that he is honorable. They underestimate how many people will treat this as an elitist effort to tell the Democrats' most faithful voters and volunteers to STFU and go away.

(4,760 posts)I am both furious and despondent. He doesn't deserve any of this. He's been one of the best presidents we've had - full of grace, empathy and intelligence. What's happening now is a horror.

(1,343 posts)This is the same shit the GOP and the media did to Howard Dean after 'the scream. They essentially railroaded him out if the race completely.
if you are going to back Joe, be sure and understand this is for the long haul. The GOP/media and wobbly dems will try to bury him, and they will not let up until election day, most assuredly longer since I believe he will win this election.

(16,223 posts)Hes seen a lot and is very tough. Its our future I worry about, that is, if we get rid of him and lose, what then? Will the donors and democratic leaders apologize? Or will they all be in jail for opposing Trump?

You know he wants to just be a statesman like Jimmy Carter.
When I was working I had decided to just keep working until I dropped and let the company just plant me behind the admin building.
But when I turned 65, what I always enjoyed doing and lived for just turned into drudgery and it got harder to have the enthusiasm for the job. I wonder if he ever fills that way with crap coming from every direction.

(330 posts)A man that has been through so much in his life was begged to save the country against an orange tyrant. He sacrificed for us and not only won but has become one of the most successful presidents of all time. What does he get in return? A swift kick in the gut not by Republicans but by our own party which is disgraceful. Even if Joe drops out he deserves better than what he got. With allies like our leadership who needs enemies?

(1,584 posts)... and I HAVE been screaming. At least with a lot of capital letters.
There's no doubt in my mind that the Big-Money donors factor into this, BIG time. The Big wigs at the top of the food chain have offered NOTHING to justify their position, apart from their "Serious Concerns" that he can't win. So, lessee...
Biden beat Trump like a cheap drum once already. (CHECK)
Biden accomplished more TANGIBLE GOOD for the American people in a single term that any president in my memory (and I was only a year shy of voting age when you were born!) (CHECK)
Biden gave stupendous, kick-ass speeches when called upon. (CHECK)
Biden gave an honest apology and a verifiable explanation of why he did poorly in the "STYLE" category of the debate judges' scorecards in that asinine dog-and-pony show that his detractors point to as "proof" that he's (A) senile (B) Too old (C) Dead, and that's actually James Woods impersonating him. Yes, somebody who would lose a spelling contest to a potted plant actually SAID that! (CHECK)
Biden has performed like a champ ever since. (CHECK)
So fuck ALL his detractors straight to hell, and let's GET JOE ELECTED!

(414 posts)Joe is pissed off right now that people have no faith in him and his judgement. I hope his anger inspires him to prove all the naysayers wrong and he whips Trump by a larger margin this time. Obama has always seemed like a weak supporter so not surprised at his wavering. Full steam ahead Joe...I love ya.

Joe Biden has experience doing the thing others think he cannot do.

(16,331 posts)What is wrong with our society these days? No one is ever satisfied no matter what you do for them. Everyone seems to have already forgotten what a horrible mess this place was in after the previous 4 years and all the deaths from Covid.
There is so little gratitude for what they have.

(55 posts)Honestly, let the election run its course. If, after the inauguration, Biden feels the need to step down then he can hand the reins over to Kamala Harris. I just hate to see him kicked when he's sick and not feeling very well. People are behaving like hyenas around him.

(1,662 posts)Joe Biden is the kind of man who will over extend himself out of not wanting to say no. He truly loves meeting with every day voters and hates to slow down as he feels hes letting others down.
The COVID diagnosis may give him an excuse to rest for a couple of days. They say he is taking PAXLOVID and that stuff works fast. Everyone I know who had a COVID diagnosis and took PAX early on were symptom free 48-72 hours. IfJoe has an excuse to rest and take a few days off, I think it will the shot in the arm he needs.

(362 posts)All of this talk is just noise. We, the Democratic voters, already chose him to be our nominee for another term. I do not see leaders of our party telling us our votes dont matter.
Hopefully, President Biden is resting and recuperating after the COVID diagnosis. Once recovered, he can tell America that he will continue the work hes already accomplished.
If we didnt want him for another four years, we would have chosen someone else in the primary. He is our guy.

(92 posts)...is a class war within the Democratic Party... It's us versus the donor class. Schiff, Tester are being pressured by their rich donors to call for Joe to step down. Nancy Pelosi?? Come on, you're older than Joe. YOU step down. Trump planted this idea in the media (NYT). and now the Dems have taken the bait and running with it. Trump knows he can't beat Biden.
And I honestly believe if Joe felt he couln't do it, he would step down.

(15,169 posts)is that Joe is a man who lived through personal tragedies that would crush an ordinary person. He was mocked for his stutter as a young boy and counted out. He overcame that and won election to Congress. He lost most of his new family as a young congressman-elect. Then as VP, lost his oldest son to cancer. NO parent should outlive their child, ever!
He came out of tragedies stronger but with more empathy towards anyone who suffers. THAT is why he deserves to be where he is.
And after all that, to be stabbed in the back by his friends, stabbed in the FRONT by his colleagues, called decrepit or declining because he stuttered in a debate I cannot tolerate that. I think that's why the base is solidifying around Joe. They don't like their votes discarded, but they HATE to see a good man thrown to the curb by the vey people who in the same breath admit HE IS DOING A GOOD JOB.
Then you pile on the utter stupidity of of a successful incumbent president stepping aside for a fairy-dust sparkle-fucking-unicorn ticket with ZERO DOLLARS raised for the general, which is in less than four months and I have to think our friends are being blackmailed by their largest donors, because the only other explanation is that parasitic brain worms have affected their judgement and good sense. I think THEY should resign and let the adult in the room keep doing what he's doing. Or else put on your big boy pants and fight the fucking Republican fascists instead of the one person keeping them at bay and the ONLY person EVER to defeat Trump.
