I was sent this by a right winger family member, he said the Swedes are sick of the crime rate going up so their policies making immigration harder and pushing people out will help. Well it turns out their immigration numbers are negative now, and I am sure he is going to keep gloating about it especially if the crime rate starts dropping. Sweden seems to have the same problems the USA has, lots of crime in poverty areas. And according to what little info I can find the poverty areas have a lot of immigrants and first generation. The income/wealth gap is also higher now that it has even been, so much for a progressive democratic socialist country.

(1,166 posts)Border crossings in the U.S. are lower than when the orange turd was in the White House. The orange turd did nothing about immigration when he was in the White House. Crime rates in immigrant communities are lower than they are for communities where everyone was born and raised in the U.S. The orange turd is a 1 man crime wave. Native American Indians are the real Americans. All of the rest of us are here because of immigration. The biggest increase in crime happened while the orange turd was in the White House. The biggest drop in crime has happened during the Biden'Harris administration. It's the orange turd and the magas who refuse to address the issue of gun violence. The easy availability of guns is fueling crime. No other country in the world has the number of guns that the U.S. has and because of that, they don't have the crime rates that we have either. Europe has a much better safety net so they also don't have the poverty rates that we have either.

Then I'm right back with you when you start talking about crime and the fact that immigrants are massively less likely to commit crimes, cause you're talking facts again there.

(55,334 posts)I assume you mean "except those living in the Great Rift Valleys" (there's two of them). The people of Mozambique or Somalia or Sudan are just as much immigrants, by your definition, as every single person in Australia or Europe or Asia or the Americas, since their ancestors migrated to those places too, right?
Except you'd have to determine which people living in the Rift Valleys only had 100% of ancestors being those who had never ever moved out of the Valley, right? If they had ancestors who migrated (which by the way, all humans did for hundreds of thousands of years) then they too are immigrants. (concluded below the helpful map)
Or we can drop the silliness and say that people who are born in a particular country are native to that country. And people who get naturalized to another country, depending on the laws of each country, are citizens and fully belong when they live.

(8,329 posts)My chief contention is that we spend we too much energy trying to draw lines between us all.
That's exactly why I dislike the distorted rhetoric of saying "We're all immigrants"... cause
(1) we're not, and
(2) there's nothing inferior or diminishable about being one.

(1,166 posts)I was exposing the fact that the far right has a problem with immigration despite the fact that their ancestors were the very immigrants that they now despise. Vance is now claiming that German and Irish immigrants brought crime to America. 1 in 4 Americans has either German or Irish ancestry. Not a smart move for Vance to insult the ancestry of so many voters. It's long overdue for exposing the far right's immigration hypocrisy.

(10,883 posts)According to the country's employment agency, Sweden requires 64,000 immigrants a year to prevent economic struggles due to the labor shortages [17]. As previously stated, in 2018 only 11,000 immigrants were granted asylum, due to recently enacted restrictive immigration policy.
If they are now net negative (which may or may not be true because part is just cleaning up registrant database) they are going to facing more and more problems with labor shortages.
And if we implemented mass deportations, the economic fallout would be horrible.
