Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsHad a little situation in the Pahrump, NV WalMart today with a Trumper,
I had just dropped off a load at their loading dock, decided to do some resupply of my groceries for my truck, so I'm at the self-check out paying for my groceries, I'm wearing my Kamala for President T Shirt and my USMC Vietnam Veteran ball cap, next to me is a man wearing a MAGA , ball cap, he was giving me the stink eye while I was checking out, he said that I shouldn't be wearing my shirt in His town, I ignored him and continued to check out, at this point, the WalMart associate assigned to the bank of machines came to me and said that I was very brave for wearing my T Shirt in Pahrump as it was Trump country, I looked her and him dead in the eyes and pointed to my hat and said that I had earned the right, as an American citizen and a combat vet to support and vote for whomever I wanted to.
The Trumper finished his purchases and slinked out with his tail between his legs and the associate thanked me for my "bravery" in a very red county, I told her that it wasn't about bravery, it was about the right thing.
Peace out
Dan

(14,466 posts)luckily, WalMart has been very good to us independent truckers, they let us use their facilities to clean up, use their break room and let us stay overnight in their parking lot to get some rest.
I know a lot of people have negative thoughts of WalMart, but, as an independent trucker, I've never had any problems with them, they pay top dollar and are very accommodating for truck drivers.

(5,027 posts)Walmart has never let me stay inside the D.C.
They have been pretty pleasant when I've delivered to them. Sometimes pretty slow unloading.
But I've never stayed overnight or used the drivers facilities.
Unless I was working as the company delivering out of there.
I've worked out of 4 if the D.C.'s for sometimes months at a time.
Drop trl, park, take a shower, sleep.
Rinse, repeat.
I liked working out of them. Do 2 or 3 stops, then back for another load or just shut down.
I did notice the OO's made pretty good money doing that. But that was mostly overflow and they never stayed long.
Just my .02.
MarineCombatEngineer
(14,466 posts)but the Pahrump WalMart has been very accommodating to us independents, I've seen RV's spending the night there without any problems.
During the Covid crisis, the majority of WalMart's I delivered to were very kind to us and went out of their way to make sure that we were taken care of.

(2,221 posts)There wasn't much in the way of interesting alternative news in those days. "Sightings" on TV and the occasional Linda Moultan Howe special. I first learned about the Yamal hole there. There was a lot of chaff, but occasional wheat there. Sometimes I would listen to the libertarian economists for a while. It was startling to me how simplistic their theories were. David Paulides can sure spin a yarn. I think that Dr Meldrum is on the level. Jim Marrs was interesting but sometimes he would get a bit political and I would just change the station.

It's a very, very red county with a lot of red lunatics.
I really don't like delivering loads to Pahrump, but most of my loads are going to Pahrump WalMart and they pay top mileage, which helps with the bottom dollar.

(84,612 posts)And thank you for your diligent service to the country we all proudly share! Somehow, though, saying "thank you" just doesn't seem enough, considering what you experienced way too up-close, AND the shit you unfortunately still have to put up with.
NOBODY should give you a hard time because you said it best - you HAVE INDEED earned the right to support and vote for whomever you want. You earned that privilege the hard way. It's only fools who either can't, or don't recognize and/or understand that.

(14,466 posts)but I don't consider myself any more special than any other American, I had a job to do, like millions of other Americans, civilians or vets, and I did it to the best of my abilities, I don't use my status as a vet for any special privileges, I'm no different than the postal delivery person, the checker at a grocery store, a teacher, which I have a great respect for, or a ditch digger, but I do appreciate the thanks very much.

I was just noting the screen name of MarineCombatEngineer. Seems to me it's nice to appreciate people who actually did serve. They've earned our respect, whether we agree on participation in the military or not. I certainly did not serve, and I attended more than a few protests during the Vietnam war. But I can still appreciate someone who did serve, even if we might not agree on the reasons or motivations.

Also, if you ever travel through Pahrump, be very careful of the Nye County Sheriff's Office, they are corrupt as hell.

(902 posts)I am sure as a combat veteran you saw many horrific things.
But in a way we are at war here today in the USA. No the bullets are not flying out her in the heartland - yet.
But shots are getting fired every day just like your encounter in that store. It's a continuation of the age old war between good and evil.
I never thought I would see this happen in my lifetime, but all you have to do is look at a history book to realize we must constantly be on guard against the forces of darkness.

(13,648 posts)I've gone through Pahrump and other small Nevada towns like that on a government project several times before in the early 90's.
Tourists and truck drivers are "suffered" because they bring in revenue and supplies, but if you don't belong in "their" town, you just get yerself out as soon as your business is done.
They sure like their government subsidies and modern comforts invented and built by those evil, diverse outsiders though. They justify those things by pretending God gives those to them, like a parent giving their kids fancy Christmas presents because they deserve them.

(1,646 posts)Pahrump is in deep red Nye County, though only an hour from blue Clark County (Las Vegas). It seems like the average age of Pahrump residents is 75 to 80. It's also the hometown of Dennis Hof, the self-styled "Trump from Pahrump" and former brothel owner. Hof owned the Love Ranch brothel in Crystal, Nevada, just north of Pahrump, where basketball star Lamar Odom got into some trouble in 2015.
Dennis Hof was on the ballot in 2018 for a Nevada Assembly seat but died suddenly before the election. This happened after a party he had with his former girlfriend Heidi Fleiss, Joe Arpaio, Grover Norquist and Ron Jeremy - what a group. He died in the same room where Lamar Odom had been found unconscious 3 years earlier.
It was too late to remove Hof's name from the ballot, and polling places had signs saying that he was deceased, but he won the election anyway. The local joke was that "voters would rather have a dead pimp than any Democrat." Under Nevada law, the seat was declared vacant. County commissioners from Lincoln, Nye and Clark counties conducted a weighted vote to determine Hof's replacement, since that Assembly district included parts of those 3 counties. The seat was awarded to Gregory Hafen II, who still holds the seat today.
That Walmart in Pahrump is open 24/7; I believe it is never closed except maybe on Christmas and a couple other holidays. You can go in there at 3 am and see the oddball critters of Pahrump in full glory.

I remember a great Native American Pow Wow one weekend. They had one in Pahrump every fall before COVID. Don't know if it's started again. If you've never been to a PowWow, I highly recommend it.
Pahrump isn't far from Death Valley, another great experience, in November of course.
On Friday and Saturday night, the lounge at the local motel had a band. They were pretty decent. Several of the locals in a dance class would attend and show off their lessons. That was fun.
It's an ugly little town, but that was around 2014, pre trump.. Obama was president and I didn't hear any griping about him, but I'm sure there was plenty. That said, it was a different time when people kept their hate to themselves.
HBO did a one season series about a radio station in Pahrump. I only watched it cause I stayed there, but it was a glimpse. There are Democrats in Pahrump. Might be a fun thing to watch when you're staying in the Walmart parking lot.
