Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia said Wednesday he wants Congress to have more control over selecting the U.S. postmaster general after a mail-service breakdown in his state.
Ossoffs proposed Postmaster General Reform Act would require the U.S. Senate to confirm a presidents appointment to the role. Right now, the position is appointed by the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors without confirmation from Congress. The legislation would also allow postmaster generals to stay in office for a maximum of two five-year terms. The position currently has no term limits.
The execution debacle by the U.S. Postal Service in Georgia has been a failure of leadership and a failure of management, and it has reflected the incompetent leadership and the incompetent management of the postmaster general himself, Ossoff said at a news conference Wednesday.
Lawmakers across states have criticized DeJoy for his management of the Postal Service. The legislation comes as DeJoy has tried to squash concerns from election officials throughout the country that the postal system is not prepared to handle a rush of mail-in ballots ahead of the November election.

(12,858 posts)As one of his constituents, I can attest that our USPS mail service is pathetic as it is around the country. I recently mailed a birthday card across town a week before the recipients birthday, with no intervening holiday. It took TWO weeks to arrive!
This had gone on too long two years ago. DeJoy needs to go pronto.

(340 posts)My Son lives about 15 miles to the west of us. We used to have a mail distribution center about 15 miles to the east of us. DeJoy shut that distribution center down and sold the building. He moved the distribution center about 150 miles to the east of us.
Recently my Son sent me a birthday card. That card went sailing past us on the same highway and then sailed past the old distribution center 15 miles to the east of us and then traveled the 150 miles east to the new distribution center where it then sat overnight and was postmarked and sent back 150 miles plus 15 miles more to the west to finally arrive here several days later.
It used to take one day.
Fire that incompetent POS.

(4,237 posts)Mail comes at completely irregular times. One day we may not get any mail. The next day, the guy comes by and puts stuff in our box three different times during the day, including at night. Since it takes forever to send something in the mail and have it get to its destination, I've all but stopped using it. When we *have* to mail something, I have hubby take it directly to the post office. I don't know if that helps get it there faster, but at least I know it got acted upon!
The three daily trips to the mailbox are a real gas... not a big deal, but when did THAT start happening???
Of it is they have new employees who dont know the routes as well as the regular mail carrier.
We only have a P.O. Box and sometimes that doesnt even help, for example, we get someone else mail or we never get a piece of mail. My husband worked at usps for thirty-four years until he retired in 2017. Things were going downhill then and got much worse when trump put Dejoy in as postmaster.

(4,237 posts)about free and fair elections. People not getting ballots in time, or ballots not being postmarked or delivered in time. How many elections has DeJoy been through now? And it seems like he just keeps degrading the service more and more.

(19,473 posts)I'm assuming their hands are tied somehow. Maybe it's time for President Biden to start
using his new immunity powers the SCOTUS gave him. Send Federal Marshalls over to
his office, make him sign a resignation letter and haul his worthless ass out of there!
And if he refuses, "OK then Biden will use his immunity powers to put you in Federal prison
for 20 years with no early parole for good behavior." "Here's your orange clothes, let's go"

(9,873 posts)Good luck with the Republicans in the House and Senate EVER approving that happening...............Even with us having a simple majority, McConnell will do just like he has done many times before, making the vote needing a 2/3 majority to win approval.....
DeJoy, in the last elections, has devoted himself to destroy mail in voting, and to interfere with it at every turn.
As an added Bonus, he is working non-stop to obliterate the USPS, AND to destroy one of the largest UNIONs, if not THE largest union in the entire U.S.

(2,571 posts)The USPS Board of Governors can only do that. It's why this proposal gives congress more oversight.
I run a small mail order business - my revenue depends mostly on the USPS to get my shipments to my customers pronto. They are doing a STELLAR job.
But it's not because of De Joyless, it's in spite of him.

(34,548 posts)...three weeks late. Earlier this year a check we sent to the electric company in the mail was stolen and washed. (Thankfully our bank caught it.) We had to close our checking account, contact the holders of all outstanding checks and rewrite new checks.
None of this kind of stuff happened before this incompetent fraud was installed by Trump.
It's a disgrace he's still there.

(30 posts)I can assure you that Harrisburg, PA distribution center gets the job done. People take pride in their work to get the mail where it needs to be. Ive heard it said many times and I agree, This could be my mail and I dont want it delivered all ripped up or late. Tonight Ill be on a machine that runs WV. First pass gets it to your neighborhood. We then run it again (2nd pass) that breaks it down by street address. After we send that out well start a first pass on 17001. Now mind you WV includes 25401/2/3/4/5 and 19. Same with 17001 whch is Harrisburg city. 17002/3/4/7/9 & 11. Once we send this mail to the docks for delivery I have no idea how long it takes to get to its destination. Id like to think for as fast as we get it out it will be delivered to its next destination.
