BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) – A bystander who was shot by police officers while they pursued a man accused of fare evasion in a Brooklyn subway station suffered brain damage, sources told PIX11 News on Wednesday.

Officers followed the suspect, Derell Mickles, 37, throughout the Sutter Avenue subway station on Sunday after he allegedly didn’t pay the $2.90 fare, according to the NYPD. He is accused of charging at the officers with a knife, which is when they fired their guns, police said.

Mickles, two bystanders, and an NYPD officer were all injured in the shooting, according to police. The 49-year-old bystander was shot in the head, sources said. The bystander, identified by his family as Gregory Delpeche, was heading to work when shots rang out. Delpeche had surgery to reduce swelling in his brain.

His family is looking into hiring a lawyer.

So they can come into work and shoot up the place because someone ran out on a $2.90 subway fare.

So what if a few innocents get shot or killed - the $2.90 subway fare is paramount and must be avenged at any cost even human life.

They're probably having to beat them off with a stick.

Sad he has diminished capacity, but I bet those attorneys all want the job.

10. The guy did jump the turnstile literally right in front of the cop

And he definitely charged the cops with the knife and they tried tazers 2 times to no effect
I think one of the cops caught a round too as he calls out "I've been hit"

Video of it is on Youtube:

Maybe cops have better things to do than confront a fare jumper.
I don't approve of just not spending the $3, but to escalate it to gunfire?
Seems like there's no excuse.
Also, what's with tasers failing? We read about this a lot. Why are they so ineffective? And, if they are, what's the purpose of buying them & carrying them?

13. Well if people can jump the turnstile right in front of cops & they do nothing that might encourage it I'd think

And they didn't escalate it, the guy who pulled the knife and ran at cops with it did IMO

Bystander getting hit sucks for sure.

He had a baggy teeshirt, I don't think the tazer probes made good contact.

Between 2003 and 2013, the period for which financial data is publicly available, the MTA’s operating revenues increased by 69 percent. But during the same period, the authority’s operating expenses grew by 96 percent.
The majority of the subway's revenue comes from fares paid by riders. As of August 2023, the base fare is $2.90, but there are reduced fares for people with disabilities, the elderly, and low-income New Yorkers

Charging at cops with a deadly weapon at close quarters can & will get you shot though, esp if they tried tazers 1st
