Over 50% of Americans Support Mass Deportation? Really?

I read an article recently that said that the MAJORITY of Americans are in favor of some sort of mass deportation of immigrants. Evidently, that's one of the reasons for the stupid cat comment that won't go away. The stupid cat comment reminds people that Trump supports deportation.

Even if it's 50.1%, I'm surprised. So, a poll...

I suspect the only time they even think about it is listening to repugs sprout their nonsense. Most of us either have more important things to worry about or we know the havoc it would create. We look around our neighborhoods and farms and realize what a huge percentage of the work is done by immigrants or the children of immigrants. Florida would come to a screeching halt and become uninhabitable.

The whole "they're taking our jobs" thing kills me. More and more native-born Americans do not want to do certain kinds of jobs. We have a teacher shortage to start with. A lot of people don't want to work retail. A lot of people don't want to mine or do anything risky/dirty.

As a nation, we would be LOST without immigrants, but some people just don't get it.

About the Study
This Scripps News/Ipsos poll was conducted by Ipsos from September 13 to September 15, 2024, using
the probability-based KnowledgePanel®. This poll is based on a nationally representative probability
sample of 1,027 adults age 18 or older. The sample includes 401 respondents that are currently residents
of Arizona.
The survey was conducted using KnowledgePanel, the largest and most well-established online
probability-based panel that is representative of the adult U.S. population. Our recruitment process
employs a scientifically developed addressed-based sampling methodology using the latest Delivery
Sequence File of the USPS – a database with full coverage of all delivery points in the U.S. Households
invited to join the panel are randomly selected from all available households in the U.S. Persons in the
sampled households are invited to join and participate in the panel. Those selected who do not already
have internet access are provided a tablet and internet connection at no cost to the panel member. Those
who join the panel and who are selected to participate in a survey are sent a unique password-protected
log-in used to complete surveys online. As a result of our recruitment and sampling methodologies,
samples from KnowledgePanel cover all households regardless of their phone or internet status and
findings can be reported with a margin of sampling error and projected to the general population.
The study was conducted in English. The data for the national gen pop sample were weighted to adjust
for gender by age, race/ethnicity, education, Census region, metropolitan status, household income, and
party ID. Party ID benchmarks are from the 2024 NPORS annual survey. The demographic benchmarks
came from the 2023 March Supplement of the Current Population Survey (CPS).
• Gender (Male, Female) by Age (18–29, 30–44, 45-59 and 60+)
• Race/Hispanic Ethnicity (White Non-Hispanic, Black Non-Hispanic, Other, Non-Hispanic,
Hispanic, 2+ Races, Non-Hispanic)
• Education (Less than High School, High School, Some College, Bachelor or higher)
• Census Region (Northeast, Midwest, South, West)
• Metropolitan status (Metro, non-Metro)
• Household Income (Under $25,000, $25,000-$49,999, $50,000-$74,999, $75,000-$99,999,
$100,000-$149,999, $150,000+)
• Party ID (Democrat, Lean Democrat, Republican, Lean Republican, Independent/Something else)

I don't think most Americans know what an illegal immigrant is. No green card, no work visa, no student visa, no amnesty, no refugee status...

3.3% of all people living in America are "unauthorized". And 14% are authorized. Most immigrants make up our nation's workforce. (No freeloaders... another myth debunked.)

So really, who is going to get deported?

Don't know if that is defined as "mass"

People are permitted to make asylum claims, but a majority of those are denied after receiving due process. They are then expected to return to their COO, but many do not.

It is somewhat cruel to let people get acclimated for years while waiting for a hearing, knowing they likely won't be eligible for asylum, and then expecting them to return back to their home country when their claim is denied.

According to our current system & laws, not everyone is eligible to stay permanently.

One of those things people are in favor of in theory, but once someone actually explained the details of how that would look, they’d rethink it. I’d say almost 40% are probably in favor of it.

The one conservative that I spend any time with (non-MAGA and I don't THINK would vote for Trump) seems to follow a mainstream church that doesn't strike me as a hypocritical fundamentalist variety. But, she's had her share of Fox-infuence in the past--albeit she denies watching now.

We don't talk politics--at least almost never. But, she's from Texas and sometimes some "things" bubble out.
