MD-SEN: How Hogan is navigating an uphill battle for a Maryland Senate seat

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland — As he campaigns for Senate in one of the bluest states in the country, Larry Hogan is testing the limits of a political strategy: How fast and far can he run from former President Donald Trump.

The Republican former governor of Maryland has publicly rejected Trump’s endorsement, said he won’t vote for him for president, and talks proudly about dispatching National Guard troops to quell the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol.

“From the moment that Donald Trump came down the escalator until today, I have always made it clear exactly where I stand,” Hogan said in a recent speech to a conservative organization in the suburbs northeast of Washington.

It’s a strategy that would be career suicide for most Republicans and is markedly different even from GOP candidates in other blue states. Former professional baseball player Steve Garvey, for example, just dodges questions about Trump in his longshot campaign for Senate in solidly Democratic California.

So far, Hogan’s approach hasn’t delivered the results he needs.

Okay, most people here in MD think that Larry was a good governor. He has a lot of goodwill because of his public battle with cancer. Being a cancer survivor also helped when he was one of the few Republican sane Republican governors during COVID. He tried to get us tests from South Korea, but they were a bust. But at least he tried. He told people to wear masks, not take ivermectin or whatever other snake oil. His wife is a Korean immigrant, and he has addressed anti-Asian hate. Plus, he LOATHES the Orange Felon.

That being said, he's still a Republican. He still went full racist during the Freddy Gray riots in Baltimore. He's wishy-washy on choice. And the Orange Felon endorsed him.

Angela Alsobrooks has been a good PG County Executive. Yes, she has an unforced error with her tax issue from selling her properties. But, she has come out and apologized and is paying it back. (Frankly, it was probably more her accountant's fuck-up than hers.) I've been in PG County since 1987. It's always been economically red-lined because it's a majority-minority county. But, we've seen a lot of growth here. National Harbor, the improvements to College Park, the Upper Marlboro area, etc. We still have crime, but who doesn't?
