While Trump attacks the Biden administration's ongoing response to Hurricane Helene, lets not forget that Trump blocked congressionally approved aid to Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. He then blocked an investigation looking into why it was depriving the U.S. territory of congressionally approved funds.

A Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of Inspector General report made public Thursday also found that tensions between the department and the Office of Management and Budget resulted in unprecedented procedural hurdles that produced delays in the disbursement of the congressionally approved funds.
It all started after 2018 when OMB began requiring HUD to send grant notices for disaster funds through an interagency review process for approval, making it hard for HUD to publish the notices needed to unlock funding in a timely manner. Investigators found that OMB had never before required such a review process for a notice allocating recovery funds.
Former HUD Deputy Secretary Brian Montgomery told investigators about a phone call he had with then-OMB Director Russell Vought in which Montgomery told Vought the actions from his office were equivalent to holding disaster-relief funds hostage, according to the report.

(17,774 posts)It is typical Trump to criticize as a ways of obscuring his horrible record handling disasters beyond his mishandling of the pandemic.

When a 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Puerto Rico in January 2020*, President Trump remained publicly silent about the emergency, even though he often publicly comments on natural disasters.
In December 2019, President Trump personally intervened in budget talks to cut Medicaid funding to Puerto Rico by half.
The Trump administration imposed severe restrictions on billions of dollars in emergency relief to Puerto Rico.

President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that Puerto Rico is going to have to shoulder more responsibility for recovery efforts from Hurricane Maria, saying the federal governments emergency responders cant stay there forever.
His comments in which he also blamed the beleaguered island for a financial crisis largely of their own making and infrastructure that was a disaster before the hurricane come as Puerto Rico still reels from a lack of electricity, public health access and a rising death toll. The remarks quickly prompted cries from Democratic lawmakers, who argue that Puerto Rico still needs a lot of help, as well as the mayor of San Juan, who said they were unbecoming and appeared to come from a hater in chief.
Meanwhile, Texas and Florida two states Trump won during last years presidential election also were struck by severe hurricanes recently, but the President has made no public indication that the federal government is pulling back on its response there.

Here's a bit on some New Yorkers and Puerto Ricans who Trump can never touch:
Lets celebrate National Borinqueneers Day!
By Carlos Cuebas
U.S. Army Garrison Fort Buchanan, April 12, 2024
FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico In 2021, the U.S. Congress designated April 13 as National Borinqueneers Day. The 65th Infantry Regiment, also known as Borinqueneers, was the only Hispanic unit from the Korean War to receive the Congressional Gold Medal. The youngest of the surviving members are in their 80s and 90s.
Today, as we celebrate National Borinqueneers Day, many across the United States will hear these stories and can only imagine. However, for personnel assigned at Fort Buchanan, seeing members of the Borinqueneers around the installation is a daily occurrence.
One of the members of the Borinqueneers who frequently visits Fort Buchanan is Victor Labarca Lago.
"In that faraway country, we went through very traumatic, life-changing experiences that taught us the importance of working as a team and constantly collaborating with each other," said Labarca Lago, recalling his time on the Korean peninsula.
However, for Labarca Lago, April 13 is a bittersweet date.
"April 13 is a glorious day, but for me, it is also sad because I had friends in Korea, and you saw them during the day, and the next day, they died defending democracy. This date brings back many memories for me," added Labarca Lago, whose son is an Afghanistan veteran.
Labarca also talked about why the new generations of citizens should know the story of the 65th Infantry Regiment.
"I would tell young people to read the history of the 65th Infantry so they will better understand what we did and how we defended the lifestyle they enjoy today. It is important to be informed," added the veteran.
For Charles N. Moulton, commander of Fort Buchanan, the Borinqueneer's performance in battle many decades ago teaches valuable lessons that apply not only to current and future generations of Soldiers but also to everyone in the United States.
"Imagine the stress of a battlefield in Korea and how these Puerto Rican men had to make quick decisions with enemies around every corner, in very different weather, and facing two languages most of them did not dominate: Korean and English. Despite all these adverse circumstances, the members of the 65th Infantry Regiment moved forward and accomplished their mission with impressive results," said Moulton.
According to the Department of Defense, in January 1951, the 65h Infantry Regiment participated in Operation Thunderbolt, a reconnaissance-in-force, and Operation Exploitation, an exploitation mission to the Han River. By the end of the month, the regiment had advanced to a region just south of Seoul and was ordered to seize three Chinese-held hills. The assault began on January 31 and took three days. On February 2 February 2, 1951, with the objective within reach, two battalions of Borinqueneers fixed bayonets and charged the enemy position, forcing the communist soldiers to flee. It was the last U.S. Army battalion-sized bayonet charge in history.
"Due to their courage, the Borinqueneers received numerous awards for valor during the Korean War, including two Korean Presidential Unit Citations, 2,771 Purple Heart Medals, 606 Bronze Stars, 256 Silver Stars, nine Distinguished Service Crosses, and the Medal of Honor. What a testament to service to the country," said Moulton.
The commander of the only U.S. Army installation in Puerto Rico encouraged everyone in the U.S. territory and across the nation to take a moment to reflect on the great sacrifices and achievements of the Borinqueneers, who defended the democratic lifestyle with their service.
"Thank you, Borinqueneers, for your example, and congratulations on your day. The U.S. Army's storythe most powerful Army on earthwould not be complete without the significant contributions made by soldiers assigned to the 65th Infantry Regiment," added Moulton.
During World War II and the Korean War, Fort Buchanan processed local troops through its replacement center, most of them members of the 65th Infantry Regiment. Today, Fort Buchanan serves as a readiness enabler platform for approximately 15,000 active-duty Reserve and National Guard soldiers, the Marine Corps Reserve, and members of the Navy Reserve.

PS: My late Puerto Rican uncle, also served in combat during the Korean War as a member of the United Stateas Marine Corps.

(17,774 posts)Trump's efforts to drag his feet on aid contributed to the misery that followed Hurricane Maria. Of course, Trump's response was to just claim that the death toll was fake news.
https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/13/politics/trump-puerto-rico-death-toll/index.html
3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico. When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths. As time went by it did not go up by much. Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000, he said in a tweet Thursday morning as Carolinians prepared to be pummeled by Hurricane Florence.
After Trump received backlash from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers over this false claim, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley released a statement Thursday that said, As the President said, every death from Hurricane Maria is a horror. Before, during, and after the two massive hurricanes, the President directed the entire Administration to provide unprecedented support to Puerto Rico.

Earlier this month, the islands governor formally raised the death toll from Hurricane Maria to an estimated 2,975 from 64 following a study conducted by researchers at The George Washington University. CNNs own reporting reflects similar numbers. The university study accounted for Puerto Ricans who succumbed to the stifling heat and other aftereffects of the storm and had not been previously counted in official figures. Much of the US territory was without power for weeks.
