https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2024/10/04/prominent-latter-day-saints-urge/Four prominent and politically active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe they know whom God would not endorse for president: Donald Trump.
The faiths scriptures, they reason, spell out divine qualifications for public service.
Honest men [and women] and wise men [and women] should be sought for diligently, and good men [and women] and wise men [and women] ye should observe to uphold it reads in Doctrine and Covenants 98. I give unto you a commandment, that ye shall forsake all evil and cleave unto all good.
These members Christine Durham, a past chief justice of Utahs Supreme Court; Brent Ward, former U.S. attorney for Utah; Richard N.W. Lambert, a retired assistant U.S. attorney for Utah; and James W. McConkie II, a civil rights attorney declared in interviews Thursday at the Utah Capitol that Trump is not honest, wise or good and thus should not get Latter-day Saint support.
It is not just a general recommendation, they argued, but rather by way of commandment. Nor is it a partisan issue, they believe, as the foursome includes two Democrats, a Republican and an independent.
They have spelled out the case in an online petition, titled LDS Opposed to Trump, explaining what they believe are Trumps lies and his actions toward others, and are hoping to help their fellow believers more clearly see that he is unqualified for office as established by God.

Latter Day Saints (LDS) has surprised me, being that so many of these religious 'freaks' have trooped over to tRUMP's banner over the years. This is a pleasant surprise to me. Especially when I think of all of the kids I grew up w/, in Independence, and Joplin, being members of the Morman Church.

Doesn't have to be huge or elaborate. I don't expect the state to flip, but all bets are off this year. She would earn a lot of respect that could carry into future cycles, should opposing dishonest candidates be necessary again
which I think it will.
Right now, people in red states have the impression that we are afraid to talk to them, which plays into the idea that we are guilty because we all eat children and they are onto us. So if you show up and be normal, that helps dispel that notion.

(5,793 posts)Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints unequivocally affirm themselves to be Christians. They worship God the Eternal Father in the name of Jesus Christ. When asked what the Latter-day Saints believe, Joseph Smith put Christ at the center: The fundamental principles of our religion is the testimony of the apostles and prophets concerning Jesus Christ, that he died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended up into heaven; and all other things are only appendages to these, which pertain to our religion.

(7,965 posts)Mormons consider themselves to be Christians. The full name is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
I don't know the teachings well enough to know where I stand on the matter. But i've known just about forever that there were things on which i (I also consider myself to be Christian) that there were Mormon teachings with which I agreed, and other teachings with which I definitely did NOT agree. That is still true. I'm right with these Mormon teachings on Harris, and in disagreement with any Mormon who would vote for Trump**.
I do try to take people as I find them. I expect there are people in every religious group, not just the ones who call them selves Christian, and also among atheists and agnostics, who are Christians and people who aren't. I don't pretend I can discern that in general, although
some people, like Trump**, are so obvious that no one should need the gift os discernment to get his number. But I guarantee that if you and I get to Heaven, there will be people there who surprise us by their presence, and also people not there who surprise us by their absence.
