My father-in-law was a POW in WWII, captured by the Nazis, starved by them, forced to march in brutal weather. He lived what it meant to be an enemy of Nazism. He was outraged when he heard, through the years, people who denied the Holocaust.
Now, here we are with misogyny +Nazism emerging in the public sphere.
Where is the strong voice of American veterans who served our country, defending our Constitution and way of life?!
We need a macho+military verbal response to Trump, Carlson and their cheering fans. We need ads by the old guys, the Greatest Generation and Tom Hanks, Steve Sinese, etc. We also need macho actors- whoever they are 🙄😜🙄- to speak out against Nazis and their ideas.
I havent seen much from veterans. But, their time has come. We need to hear from them, loudly and clearly and patriotically.

(3,312 posts)at the bar at the Legion or VFW watching Fox and bitching about how the Corps or SAC went to shit when they started letting women in.
Wish it were different, and intuitively it should be. But lots of folks vote against their own best interests, and veterans are among the worst of these.

(71 posts)we're quietly doing the right thing and voting against fascism.
I'm a member of our American Legion Post, and your characterization of other AL members is broadbrushed, and wrong.
Most of us remember (and still defend) our oath to protect against "all enemies, foreign, AND domestic" (emphasis mine).

(3,312 posts)But my own experiences with veterans groups, and military members I served with when I was in the Air Force, has been as I describe.
Now, as the military has become more diverse and as Korea, Vietnam and Cold War veterans age out, and as more women and minority veterans come to leadership in the veteran community, there will likely be change. But as of now, the National leadership of both the VFW and the Legion remains pretty much tied to the right wing, see recent VFW correspondence on immigration as an example.
But thank you, as always, for your service!

(20,251 posts)All the sacrifices and lives given throughout our history to keep our democracy n precious way of life n one man comes along with a desire to dismantle it all n he builds a cult n the followers are loyal. I feel like we are in the same position that Germany n Europe were in right before it started their hell on earth. Did the opposition feel they could stop it or were they overwhelmed? I feel like Im about to walk into a nightmare but my heart will not accept this so Im staying as positive as I can n hope all our efforts win this election and the next one until weve defeated this fascist cult n their ideology. I wonder how my parents felt going off to war n what they would have to say now

(41 posts)I'm a Navy Veteran of the Cold War. Kamala Harris was my first choice in 2020, and I'm delighted to have already cast my vote for her in 2024.
My yards signs are Veterans for Harris/Walz. We've received nothing but smiles, high-5's, and praise from passersby. My pickup truck has various Harris/Walz bumper stickers, including two that specifically mention veterans.
Just last week a lady at the gas station gave me the thumbs up. And yesterday at the grocery store an 80 year old man, non-veteran, talked to me about how he couldn't believe a single veteran would vote for tfg.
C'mon fellow Vets! Stand up and Shout! Harris/Walz 2024!
